summer learning

I'm looking for recommendations for learning programs I can do with my child over the summer to reduce learning loss. I've heard good things about reading without tears and am interested programs like that for reading and math. My kid is around kindergarten level in math and reading.

For math at that level I would focus on math games. There are lots you can buy on Amazon, and also some great YouTube accounts from math teachers featuring number games you can do with a deck of cards or other supplies you likely already have (here's one to get you started @michaelminas6989). Play several games a day and you'll make great progress on your child's number sense without it feeling like work.

For reading, find out your child's reading level at the end of the school year from their teacher with whatever system they use and stock up on books at around that level. Read together daily. Also, if they're to the level that they can read Elephant and Piggie (even if it's with assistance), those were a HUGE hit for my child. We'd each take a character and read them together, which made them less daunting and even more fun.

Assuming you're just trying to prevent learning loss, not move them ahead, these two things should do it while keeping it fun and positive.

Dreambox for math - hands down!

Agree on handwriting without tears. There's some decently fun math apps, like IXL or first in math. The libraries often have reading bingo with a prize.

Don’t over do it. Just enjoy childhood.
