So my DH is a good cop on a shift full of good cops. They have tons of life-saving awards between them and no internal affairs investigations. They support each other and hold each other accountable. In short, they are exactly what you want police to be. So here’s the question: they receive the same anti-police hostility as every other police officer. What else can they possibly do to please the anti-police crowd? PP says they “earned” this problem. What more can they do to earn your respect? Sincerely... I would like to know. It pains ME to see how beat up he feels, and yet he walks out the door to do more good work in spite of the hate he receives.

DP.
What’s your point? That a mom loves her son?

I think the point is that the loved ones of police officers are not best situated to comment on whether they are "good cops." I mean, Chauvin was so well-regarded within the force that he was allowed to train recruits despite having numerous brutality accusations and having been involved in more than one suspicious death.

....and he was a tax cheat, claiming to be resident of Florida while drawing a government paycheck in Minnesota. He was not a good, honest man.

Now talk about the police officers who testified against him.

You folks seem to believe there is an epidemic of bad police. This is just not true. The few damning videos out there get amplified to the point where you think there are no good cops out there. It’s sickening.

How many bad cops did they get fired or put behind bars?

DP

If this is a measure of being a good cop, society is screwed.
You seem to believe there are bad cops everywhere. There aren’t.

Yes there are cops doing bad things everywhere. A “good cop” that has not turned in a bad cop is not a good cop. I know you are desperate to believe yourself H has “done no harm” and believe he is a “hero” but the fact is, he probably is great on a good day, average most days, and bad sometimes.

The most authentic and good cops understand they are part of a corrupt system, doing the best they can but getting it wrong or unable to enact change way too often.

If that were true, then ONE of his fellow officers would have spoken up as Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd.

If that were true, then the MPD would not have put out a statement after Floyd's death saying that he died of "medical distress."

If that were true, then we would not have the "damning videos" because bad police would have been removed by their superiors after being reported by their peers. Yes, there are probably not THAT many truly murderous cops just looking for someone to kill, but there's a whole system in place to protect those murderous cops, which means every single one of them is rotten.

He can make it clear publicly that black lives matter to him, that he is committed to fair and just policing, that he agrees Derek Chauvin (as one example) was wrong to kneel on George Floyd's neck for 9 minutes, etc. Don's assume people just know you are one of the good guys. Say it. Show it. Condemn unwarranted police violence when it happens.

Awards awarded by policing institutions might carry less weight than making it clear that you condemn the treatment of Sandra Bland, or Philando Castile, etc. etc. The short hand to show that you agree with that is "Black Lives Matter".

DP. It seems like this issue of "there are some bad apples but most cops are good so why are they being treated bad like the bad ones" is similar to "there are some bad apples in the black community but many are good so why are they being treated bad like the bad ones".

It's interesting that some people seem to understand the situation on the black side but not the cops side. Cops can literally be shot dead in a second if they don't protect themselves properly.

Instead of just saying that cops should bend over backwards to prove that they aren't one of the bad apples, maybe the good black people should also bend over backwards to make it clear that they're not in the group that are going to fight an officer and use his weapon against him or randomly pull out a weapon of his own and fire it. But then people say why should people in that group (either group) need to do that.

I don't think anything is going to improve here until we get people on BOTH sides to acknowledge that each group could do more to show that they aren't one of the bad apples in their group. And to stop protecting the bad apples and do more to make sure that the bad apples in their group are in prison for as long as possible. With the bad apples all gone, people could relax more and we can have a better country.

Bend over backwards? Really? Just making it clear that you think police executions of suspects is wrong is bending over backwards?

I said earlier, I have a lot of patience for police and I don't expect them to be perfect. Kneeling on a neck for 9 minutes is not an "oops he made a mistake and he thought the guy was pulling out a gun" forgiveable offense. Either you condemn Chauvin or you don't. Either you condemn police violence and unprofessional behavior or you do not.

You are really reaching here. What should Plilando Castile or Sandra Bland have done to prove they were one of the good guys?

No one thinks all police are "bad".

The GOP is pushing that and it's not true.

What we do know is DT defunded the police all over the county. PERIOD> FACT. He owes those departments millions of dollars what do Trump supporters think the police should do with those short falls?

DP. WTF?? 1). There most certainly are people who hate all police. Ever heard of ACAB? Educate yourself. 2). Please provide links to back up your BS claim that Trump defunded police. We’ll wait.

Psaki just made the laughably fake claim that the GOP is behind the movement to defund police.

This is what we know as “gaslighting.”

I would have loved to sit in on the damage control meeting where they discussed their strategy for trying to flip the script.
Pure comedy.

Every Republican in Congress voted against the Covid relief bill that had 350 BILLION DOLLARS of funding for police in it. You don’t have to ask Jen Psaki, you can ask Chris Wallace.

Funny... Neither Biden nor any of the Democrats even MENTIONED police funding until they discovered that the American public believes <gasp> that violent crime is out of control.

I can hear how this conversation went........

Joe Biden (JB): I saw a poll today that shows the majority of American people think violent crime is out of control.

Ron Klain (RK): Yeah, I saw that.

JB: My poll numbers are not good on this issue.

RK: I have a plan.

JB: What can we do?

RK: We'll blame the Republican for defunding the police.

JB: (whispering) But, it is the Democrats who have pushed defunding the police.

RK: I know, but we can say it was part of the American Rescue Plan.

JB: What is the American Rescue Plan?

RK: It's the covid 19 bill I wrote that passed with only Democrat support. We can say that you included money to fund police.

JB: But many places have already defunded the police. And, they are all run by Democrats. The squad will be mad and the public may not believe us.

RK: We'll get Jen Psaki to advance the narrative. And, Cedric Richmond. And, anyone else who is interviewed by the media.
Don't worry Joe. The media is on our side. They will push the story. We can fool them all. The American public is not that smart.

JB: Ok, if you say so. Right now I have to go and...... find the.......talk to.....see if I can................ you know the thing.......

It is true there are a lot of negative perceptions of LE due to cherry picked videos going around on social media and fake cable news.

But your husband also has a warped perception of reality that is impacting how he feels. The anti-police crowd are actually a very small group of people. I'm sure your husband and his coworkers are watching Fox news and taking the "defund the police" bait. If he gets out of the trenches, he will be a better man.

My husband doesn’t watch Fox News. Ever. I can’t imagine many of his coworkers do, either. As for the anti-police crowd, it may be small but it is loud. It comes for him while he’s at work, where he is regularly scorned by local politicians. He is already a better person than I can ever be, so I’m not sure what more can be asked of him.

I don't doubt that most of the guys on your husband's squad are good people. But the reality is that cops are compulsive complainers. I've been in law enforcement for over 20 years, and these guys cry like little babies about anything that can be construed as not being supported 100% (supervisors, the public, politicians, etc.). And I can guarantee you that a lot of his co-workers are rambling on all the time about right wing talking points they got from Fox News. I wouldn't go as far as saying that it's toxic, but it's definitely annoying.

DP. After this past year, they have plenty of reason to complain.
Being pelted with fireworks, feces, urine, other unidentified liquids, and having to deal with the entitled bratty 20-somethings that have nothing better to do than to assault police officers..... they are allowed to complain.

Add to that the fact that they have been ambushed and assassinated just because they wear the uniform, I think their complaints are warranted.

No... nothing specifically for police. Biden had to come up with *something* when polls came out showing the public believes violent crime is out of control. So, he "diverted" funds. Even Newsweek noted what happened. This, of course, was published before the Biden Harris WH tried to flip the script.
