You could also say that while the overall MCPS population grew by 18% the white population fell by 38%. It looks to me like white people are increasingly unhappy with MCPS. The same thing happened in PG County after it introduced busing and it suffered a 50 year decline. PG used to be THE suburb to live in back in the 40s through the 70s. MoCo isn't immune to the same kind of decline especially with socialists steering the county government. |
I believe the under 5 age group for the whole country is majority minority now so this is not just an mcps specific change...and likely less related to fleeing and more related to larger Asian and Hispanic increases. |
Sending anyone from QO to Wootton is a stretch (it's too far away - unless someone is jerrymandering the boundaries).
Travilah may go from Wootton to Crown, or go from Wootton to QO with some QO to Crown. As far as pulling kids from across East 270 West to Crown, good luck with that. I'm also waiting to see what happens if Rio gets inundated with after-school kids looking for fun. That will really change the area dynamic. Not sure how happy the management at Rio will be. Now, if MCPS was creative, they'd move all Wootton kids into Crown; refurbish Wootton (which is really old and needs a facelift), then redraw - but I don't think they're that creative. |
Good news! Wootton is getting a facelift! It's right there in the CIP! Not to mention that the Board of Education held public hearings on the new CIP last night; did you testify? Thomas S. Wootton High School Capital Project: A major capital project is planned for this school to address various building systems and programmatic needs for this school. Expenditures for this project are included in the Major Capital Projects–Secondary. Although the Board of Education requested a completion date of August 2026, the County Council delayed the expenditures and completion date by one year to August 2027. An FY 2023 appropriation is recommended to accelerate the architectural design and site funds within the Major Capital Project to address ADA and site related issues. |
Using your argument, we could also say that Asian-American people, Hispanic people, and Black/African-American people are increasingly happy with MCPS. |
Travillah is way too far from crown. Stone mill and Dufief are much closer |
Various stores at Georgetown Square next to WJ enjoy separating kids from their money. I imagine those at Rio will, too. |
This is timely, as many in my congregation we discussing this issue. They were discussing Darnestown transferring back to QO when Crown opens. Thoughts? |
I know right. I mean who cares if some white folks are "fleeing" MCPS/MoCO? They are "fleeing" because of MoCo diversity, let them flee. They won't be missed. Win/win |
Does MCPS usually allow juniors and seniors (or at least seniors) to stay at their current high school?
Seems cruel to make seniors change schools. |
Yes, MCPS does. |
People are fleeing high col areas. That's not really news. But, does it say that Frederick is getting whiter? I keep hearing people up there saying Frederick is getting more diverse, but here, you are saying that Frederick is getting whiter (related to the topic of "white people are fleeing moco"). |
+1 overall, white people are having less children. Are there areas around here that are getting whiter? People may be leaving due to hcol ( I did from out west), but that doesn't equate to "white people are fleeing MoCo"). https://www.statista.com/statistics/226292/us-fertility-rates-by-race-and-ethnicity/ But if you don't like how MoCo has become so diverse, I hear WV is paying people $10k to $20k to move there. I think WV is something like 90%+ white, hardly any Hispanic immigrants there. You could feel to WV. |
Juniors/Seniors or just seniors? |
For the Clarksburg-Seneca Valley-Northwest boundary change, it was: all rising seniors, all rising juniors, and rising freshmen/sophomores in Clarksburg's APPS program. |
