How do you think the fall will be in fcps?

Yep, I agree. I don't see anything that make me think they will change anything from Fall 2021. In one of the town halls or something I swear I heard Spring 2022 at the earliest. I have not heard or read it since, but I always keep that in the back of my head.

You all don’t think the dropping virus numbers and ramping up a vaccine distribution, to include all teachers, will lead to five days a week? At least for elementary? Or are you just scared it won’t? (No snark trying to understand)

I do think it will end up being a year with heavy review and teaching of concepts that were cut from the curriculums this year or just not able to be done well this year virtually

Concurrent doesn't mean two days in-person. Those are mutually exclusive concepts. We'll almost certainly be back 5 days next fall. The question is what do you do with the parent holdouts.

I see what you’re saying. Good point. I will be less than impressed however if it’s five days a week but the kids are still sitting on laptops in the classroom in order to accommodate the kids who stay home. I’d be fine if the classes were beamed to the kids at home but the kids in the room still had a normal experience (of course with masks and some distancing), there’s no reason they should be staring at laptops all day just because kids at home are.

Pre-COVID my DC's second grade teacher estimated that they would spend 25% of their time on the classroom laptops. It goes up from there. They already are on the laptops for much of the day, just fewer parents noticed before.

Sorry--messed up the quoting.

Not at our school. My 5th grader said in 3rd grade they didn't even use the laptops every day and in 4th grade, pre-Covid, they used laptops for an average of an hour a day, but sometimes more and sometimes not at all. Our K-2 did not even have one-to-one devices.

I wish that were the case at our school. The big PTA fundraiser for years was to get as many 1-to-1 devices to the school as possible, even pre-FCPSON. I'm sure that was useful for DL, but for regular school it stunk.

I really hope it’s 5 days. This year has been a wash and we’ve watched friends go to private every day since august. If we are still doing a hybrid in the fall when everyone else is back to a more normal routine than we are really failing the kids.

DL needs to be county wide. If you want your kid DL then you sacrifice the base school connection. No concurrent!

I agree with this.

This was not true at our ES.

No grade in our ES had 1:1 devices.

I’m concerned that now that FCPS and teacher have collected all these slide shows, that they will just use those instead of going back to real hand on teaching and learning.

Omg no! I look forward to the day that the only time kids are using a computer is for typing up an essay or working on a project! -teacher

My oldest is slated to go to LBSS in the fall. Do you think we will be able to have 4500 people together in September (estimate of students + plus teachers there)? I am ok with it but I just really not sure that school board will be?? Thoughts?

Not sure but this is the type of thing people need to be thinking about. Their school may not be large/overcrowded, but several are. The system is at the mercy of the most crowded. It may very well be a situation where k-6 is 5 days whereas MS/HS are hybrid at least to start. This is how some private schools have had to do it this year. It's really going to depend on the vaccine rollout, community transmission, and local public health regulations in place at that time.

Last night Fauci said vaccines will be available to anyone starting in July but getting them into arms could take another couple of months after that. That puts us into early fall. We just don't know what community numbers will look like as more adults and older teens get vaccinated. We are waiting to see if this past wave was it or if we will enter another one due to new variants. Warmer weather may save us from that, but who knows. We certainly aren't in spring yet.

People who can't handle the uncertainty need to look at private school or learn to embrace uncertainty. As much as everyone wants a guarantee for 5 days in the fall they're not going to get it from this school board or superintendent. They will say "that is our plan/goal" which is not a commitment. People may feel as though they are owed a guarantee but the reality is that no one owes you anything. Learning to live with uncertainty is a skill some parent have had no choice but to master (e.g., parents of kids who are medically fragile). You can tell many parents here have not mastered that skill and do not know what to do with themselves.

+1. We don’t want to do that.

I’m probably going to accept private school & you all can thank me. If I didn’t accept private, public would not open. Once I do accept private, fcps will open full time for all. You’re welcome.

Anonymous wrote:VIrus numbers are dropping and vaccines are going out. Do you think In fall we could have more than two days in person? Will They still require such a minimization of number of students in their rooms? I’m finding it really hard to envision what will happen in the fall given the lack of information from fcps. I know they are occupied trying to deal with getting back to school this week. But sometimes it feels like nobody has planned for the fall yet... it does not inspire confidence.

NO one knows. Why do you ask people of this forum? This is so stupid. No one knows NO one knows No one knows

We just know that all of the kids in school this year will go Back next year while we will likely sit by and watch again.

There was a faculty meeting at one of the high schools this week. The principal told the teachers to prepare for concurrent teaching in the fall. This has not been announced at my school, and my principal is saying they don't know yet. Just wanted to put it out there for parents to know that there is discussion of concurrent as a possibility in the fall.

Guess we will see what the governor says about the bill requiring 5 days in person.

I teach elementary and I'm kind of mentally preparing for 5 days of concurrent. I figure they'll be a handful of kids in every class that I want to stay DL.
