How to handle insults of my kid’s college choice?

Southern colleges in "blue" Democrat areas are fine.

I mean, global white supremacist Jared Taylor graduated from Yale and his recent speaking engagements include schools in MD, CO, and AZ.

By contrast, I know gay minorities thriving at SEC schools in “red” states. ICYMI: plenty of liberals and moderates and even compassionate conservatives on campuses in red states…and plenty of a-holes at schools in blue states.

Let’s just stop labeling people with sweeping generalizations about schools and entire states. Geez.

K but Texas is kind of a dumpster though.

While his pipe dream school is my alma mater, UT Austin is his realistic dream school. We also like the area a lot. Unfortunately last week a classmate of his (they’re friends for some time, but have sort of drifted apart) gave him a lecture on why he would choose a college in Texas and went on to insult all Texans. I was like, WTF?! How to deal with crazy people like that?

I think you wake up and realize that Texans vote for white supremacists who want to control women and enjoy cruelty against minorities. Yes it’s a generalization but it’s based on reality. Not all Texans are the low IQ racists we fear but enough of them are that many of us discourage our kids from going to college there.

That does not mean that Texas doesn’t have good academic programs but the people of Texas don’t generally come across as well informed and educated so the reputation of their academic institutions will reflect that.

White males can go and not worry too much. Everyone else is in danger and probably won’t choose Texas as their first choice.

If we are speaking in generalizations, we have to first agree that UT Austin does not have the same voter base as the State of Texas. Liberal institution versus conservative state.

This one made me laugh and I wholeheartedly agree.

Learn to say 'Bless your heart' and start talking about the weather.

Seriously, I am happy for you and your son. Getting into his dream school is something to be celebrated! Shame that some in this thread just double down on the hate. Sadly, that's seemingly par for the course here on DCUM -- and explains where your son's friend learned it from.

OP here. I wanted to thank those who took the time to give your thoughtful response or share your personal experience.

I didn’t read the whole thread, but I would just say STFU and move on

My (very progressive) family lives in Texas and in fact one member of my family is very involved in Texas politics (again in a very progressive part of Texas) and I've had three young family members recently graduate from UT Austin. Two stayed in Austin, one is in NYC now. Yes, Texas politics sucks right now. Yes, there are people trying to make changes, but change is hard. UT Austin is an amazing school, Austin is an amazing city. Congratulations to your son, he's going to have the best time!

I got pregnant in Texas and I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Would he seriously use the word sissy? That’s a super misogynistic term. I haven’t heard anyone actually say that in probably 40 years. Does he also use gay as an insult and the r word?

So the main issue is if he knocks a girl up her abortion will be frowned upon?
