If your college kid is not too far away, this might be a good year to drive or take a train & meet up with them somewhere interesting about half-way in between.

People are really mean on the College forum when parents (like me) say that they don't want their kids applying to colleges a plane ride away. Obviously this is a rare and specific situation, but there are many other reasons why it's helpful to be able to reach your kids easily without dependency on air travel.

You can reach anywhere in the continental US or Canada without air travel, though.

It will just takes days upon days of driving or train or bus riding. Some students may just need to go home with friends whose families live less than a day's drive away.

Look, college kids can be resilient. If your DC isn't they likely dorm or class with kids that are. They will improvise. It will be fine.
My best college Thanksgivings were dorm spaghetti parties and movies with other kids that couldn't get home.

I limited my kids to a 6 hour drive. And I prefer even less. I stand by it, for many reasons.

Um...pretty much everyone who doesn't have their family exclusively in the DC area? Not everyone lives in the town they were born in...And it is a big deal to wait for future holidays--not everyone has tons of vacation time and can travel whenever and wherever...

Have you ever experienced staying home, having a four day break, raking leaves and binge watching TV? Some friends feel sorry for us that we don't have a lot of family around for Thanksgiving, while others are very jealous of our four day break at home. I guess in the early 1900s, most people celebrated Thanksgiving locally and didn't try and travel thousands of miles for dry turkey.

Some of us have planned to see our college kids and grads who work 2-3K miles from home.
Sure staying home alone can be fun, but we prefer to travel (and see our kids). Given they dont' get much time off, we all end up traveling. This year we might have to cancle

If you plan strategically, flying during Thanksgiving isn’t a hassle at all. We’ve done it twice in recent years both out of the country and to Orlando, and it was a smooth and easy experience both times.

Well normally it's fine, but not when 10-20% of flights are automatically cancelled and half the major airport are running 2-4 hour delays on flights that are "happening". If you have connections you are screwed, and your college kid might make it there, but take an extra 2 days to get back (if flight is cancelled or they miss connection, there won't be empty seats on other flights for everyone)

Do you know how frustrating it is to hear that everyone- like you- is all ITS JUST FINE. People are working without pay. Consumers should be striking but goodness knows Americans cant be uncomfortable for two seconds.

Why should we be striking?!?!?! We didnt' vote for this shit! We didn't vote for Americans to see 200% increases in their healthcare. We want the govt to open and do their job.

wow, 2 kids at college, and you can afford to buy them airline tickets home? simply wow! you are very different than the families I know and live with.

So? They planned to get their kids home, the R and trump are the reason they can't. so others cannot afford to fly, so they aren't. But plenty plan to and the reason they cannot is ridiculous. Govt needs to open, healthcare needs to be adequately funded or Congress can go without pay and insurance. Make that happen and they might find a fix

Yes, but this isn't really a reason to not allow your kid to be a plane ride away.

Signed,
Parent of 3 kids, who all attended college 2-3K miles from home and 2 of them were a 2 flight ride away (so 9-12 hours to get to them)

Sure, but I'm not driving 2700 miles, over multiple mountain passes in the snow in Nov/Dec to get to my kid or to have them drive home. It's a 3 day trip with 12 hour days each way (and not safe in the winter). Hence why we fly
