Everyone is welcome to celebrate whatever holiday they want.

Let the rest of us go to school.

You don't really feel that way because you don't want to have school open on Christmas. You just want Christians to be special and have the calendar built around them.

This is the worst argument of all. It’s a federal holiday, goober

So are Columbus Day and Veterans Day but many school systems don’t give off for those.

Not really.

High schoolers would much rather get out of school the end of May with fewer days off on the front end.

My high schoolers love it. Much needed breaks. Who cares if some want to get out in May? This works great for us and the other families I’ve talked to.

Not to mention we have a diverse set of neighbors and friends. We are all happy for each other that their holidays are acknowledged. And can’t do anything about special elections and Election Day!

How have we come to accept this for our children? For our community?

You sound stupid

My kid's at martial arts today. It's fine.

No. The School Board sets the calendar and recently added the unnecessary religious holidays.

Parents want their kids in school consistently, not randomly taking days off.

Parent preferences aren’t important. They’re only parents, not important stakeholders.

High school kids love it.

I actually made it my warm up discussion question in my 10th grade classes the other day (would you rather school was 4 day weeks/short summer or 5 day weeks/long summer?), and in every class the overwhelming majority chose 4 day weeks. The biggest reason was to sleep.

Plus, between activities and lots of hw and tests, they are swamped. They really appreciate the day. It really is a restful break midweek. Without the brain drain that comes after summer break.

FCPS gives those days off as well.

Of course high school kids love it. Every kid loves having a day off lol.

High school kids can be left at home alone.

This calendar doesn’t work for working parents with minor children.

It isn't like you have less school days with this calendar. There are still 180 days. Childcare costs are similar -- all of the Kindercare, TKD studios, SACC places are open on these days. And you have less weeks that you have to find childcare over the summer.

Minor children? Aren't about 95% (or more) of FCPS students minor children?

Figure out childcare if your children can't be home alone. Childcare isn't the responsibility of the school system. When you're a parent, you have a responsibility to care for your children or find a proxy such as a neighbor, babysitter, family member, daycare center, etc. It is not a privilege to state this fact. Parenthood = sacrifice and responsibility.

If you look at the calendar for next year, you will see a lot fewer days off- most of the holidays happen to fall on a weekend next year unlike this year. Hence, the extra days. Enjoy them.

There's always one of these trolls every time someone complains about holidays.

I'm still so mad at FCPS for giving kids Veterans Day off. It was the ONE DAY that I had off that the kids didn't.

An ignorant take, perhaps you need more schooling before posting. If we all stopped school for every religious holiday, being inclusive for all religions, there would be very few days for school. And the vast majority of families need to go to work to earn a living vs staying at home to watch kids, just because the school board said we can't send out kids to school to observe multiple religious holidays. -It's well meaning, but it just doesn't work.
