There’s at least 5 different speed cameras within 1 mile on just MacArthur Blvd and Foxhall Rds. Are you truly this stupid, or are you a troll? It’s hard to tell. |
There's only five of them west of the park. There's 30 or so everywhere else. |
Five whole cameras! Wow! There's 550 cameras in the city. They're mostly in Black neighborhoods. You should venture out of Foxhall once in awhile. |
It’s voluntary. |
They act like people are getting nabbed for 1 over. You have an 11mph buffer. That's almost a 50% increase over 25mph roads, and more than a 50% over 20mph roads. |
There’s 8 cameras within a half mile of my home on Hawthorne st NW in Wesley Heights. That’s 3 on MacArthur, 2 on Foxhall, 2 on Wisconsin and 1 on Mass Ave. That’s not enough cameras in my neighborhood to suit you? Eight??? As for “venturing out of my neighborhood” - uh, I live here, dumbass. My office is in my home. I see all my clients here. Of course I spend most of my time here. What else would I be doing? Do you think I should just be randomly driving around the city in places where I have no cause or reason to be there? Just out exploring? That’s what I should be doing? You sound like a 6 year old. |
Almost half the tickets aren't for speeding. Also, did you see how many tickets are being issued? 3.3 million? That doesn't seem kind of insane given there aren't even that all that many people who drive here. |
I think one of the reasons why people hate the tickets is because so many of them seem like ticky tack bullshit. You get a ticket if you don't stop at a stop sign for three full seconds, even if there isn't another soul within a mile of you, and don't let your bumper hang over the crosswalk either, or that's definitely a ticket. Meanwhile, I see mopeds flying through stop signs at 40mph with no license plates. Yesterday I saw a bicyclist going down Connecticut Avenue with a baby in the basket on the front of her bike. No tickets for them, of course, though they're putting more lives in danger than me. |
1.6 million 11mph+ speeding tickets are insane, but I imagine we think that for different reasons. We probably agree that we can't ticket drivers into obeying the law. i suspect we disagree on how to go forward as well. |
I mean, use your brain. If there were actually that many dangerous drivers, there would be an epidemic of crashes. Clearly that's not happening. Probably a lot of those tickets are a result of the city adopting absurdly low speed in limits in a lot of places. Obviously many people are not going to obey those. Those tickets are also issued regardless of the circumstances. You can be driving on a street at 6am on a Sunday morning, with literally no one else on the streets or sidewalks, and if you go 31 mph in some places, you get a ticket. That's just dumb. A lot of these tickets are also going to out of town visitors who are just driving like normal people. |
Not to mention that all of us who own vehicles pay for these accidents through elevated insurance premiums. People complain about equity and cameras, but the reality is that the truly awful behavior of some drivers in DC - and the failure of the DC government to take those drivers off the road - pushes the cost of owning a legally-insured car out of the reach of many poor families. |
Give me a break. The rates DC charges for tickets is nothing short of predatory. You can owe $1200 for a single traffic ticket. |
I'm sorry that you are so offended that the DC government sets speed limits to safeguard the welfare of DC residents. You are within your rights to feel that way, but most of the rest of us find it completely pathetic. I've been pulled over a couple of times in Maryland in circumstances that I thought were ridiculous. I went to court and contested it. You have the same right to contest any tickets issued to you by the DC government. But to pretend that DC's speed limits are some giant conspiracy - or are not informed by evidence - is very childish. |
You're making stuff up again. Here's the fine schedule: 18-2200.1 SPEED 11-15 OVR LIMT $100 18-2200.1 SPEED 16-20 OVR LIMT $150 18-2200.1 SPEED 21-25 OVR LIMT $200 18-2200 OVER 25 MPH CONTROLLED $400 18-2200 OVER 25 MPH NON-CONTROLLED $500 The fines can be cut in half if you qualify for SNAP benefits (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAdIRBjCS2I). So in DC, you can do 100mph in a 25mph zone and the fine can be as little as $200. That's absurd. Try speeding in a rural county in the south and see what happens. It's going to cost you a hell of a lot more than $200, I can guarantee you. Heck, even Virginia routinely sends drivers to jail - including one Nats outfielder and an automotive journalist - for doing over 80mph on open roads. If you really think DC fines are "predatory", about the best thing I can say about you is that you lack context. |
i mean, there is an epidemic of crashes. There is a cottage industry of apps/radio/tv shows that route you around them. People buy vehicles based on how well they do in crashes. There is an entire industry around repairing cars damaged in crashes. We make kids ride in miniature roll-cages. Half the features on new cars are tools to keep drivers from crashing into each other. The fact that we view this as normal is whats insane. |
