Boundary Review Meetings

Everyone should vote down both start time proposals.

High School kids need to get out early and although a lot of parents would love elementary to end later - the start time is incredibly late and I cannot imagine teachers would want to go that late.

Wasn't there a dedicated school start time thread? I searched and couldn't find it.

Both start time proposals are terrible.

SACC better be expanding for working parents. This is not viable for young children.

Yep, they’re expanding SACC (see the “Beyond the Bell” program) so they can balance school start times on the backs of elementary. Elementary will either start much later with a large before school program, or much earlier with a large after school program.

Which suggests they've already made a decision and will be changing the start times. Whether parents and staff like these two options or not.

I wonder how many schools would get the very late start for elementary in Option 2. Elementary for option 2 has both 9-3:45 (reasonable) and 9:50-4:35 (unreasonable). I **like** that they conveniently don't tell you what your actual elementary school time would be.

Option 2 is really pretty good except for the elementaries who get that super late start, and I wonder just how many schools it would affect.

I believe they’re shifting the entire bell schedule to the right by 30 minutes, so if you’re currently a late start, you’ll be an even later start.

All the more reason to have students at close schools. KAA should be traditional...less than 10 m8n bus ride frees buses. AAP in the in boundary schools frees buses. Kids should attend closest school possible. Fewer crisscrossing buses.

Yeah, 9-3:45 is fine and a lot of schools are already on that schedule, more or less. 8:15-8:30 start times would also be fine for elementary, but I would not want to go earlier. But 9:50-4:35 is insane. A lot of pre-K and K kids go to bed at 7!

Ah, I get it.

So Option 1 is pretty much terrible for everyone except one group, the 8:10-2:55 elementary kids (too early for the other elementary 7:45 start).

Option 2 looks good for everyone except the latest elementary start (9:50-4:35) but it's really bad and 7 years of your life.

Just leave it alone.

I don’t see them doing the 30 min later option. Little kids should not be starting school around 10:00 and getting out that late. With all the research they are showing this goes against that. Little kids learn better in the morning. Kids ending at 4:05 currently, don’t actually leave till 4:15-4:30 range. Some kids are currently getting home at 5:00. Pushing that back would have kids walking in dark and most of the busses dealing with rush hour traffic.

No kid should be going to school past 4pm. IMO, they should make the middle schools 9:20-4:05. It is the same schedule as the late ES. It is switching one crappy schedule for another one, but it is better than 9:50-4:35.

There is currently an ES that starts at 8:00. Brookfield ES. I think fifteen minutes earlier is not a big deal. Young kids learn better in the morning.

FCPS lists current start times as 8:30-3:15 and 9:20-4:05, but there are a few schools (Brookfield being the earliest which start between 8:00-8:30. They haven’t explicitly stated it one way or the other, but it’s possible when they say 7:45-2:30, what they mean for Brookfield is 7:15-2:15, as in everyone shifts 45 minutes. They need to be more specific due to the existing staggered schedule and the fact that their “existing” start time doesn’t reflect the current earliest bell schedule.

Leave start times alone - for two years middle schoolers wake up early. It’s not ideal but kids are fine.
