That is not the entire thread. The whole thing is being cut - it doesn't matter if there are late buses or not. My UMC kid is getting the shaft and all the other kids UMC or not who go to middle in FFX. |
I'm turning this around back on track for folks who are just tuning in because this is incredibly important for parents. FFX Co. is cutting all middle school after school programs in the FY26 budget. If you care, please contact your supervisor and provide feedback every chance you get before this budget is adopted. |
Your UMC kid is not getting the shaft, unless they are part of the very specific MSAS program for at-risk kids. Which I suspect they are not. |
4 days a week is not accurate for all schools. Our MS has late buses only 3 days a week. |
EVERYONE participates in MSAS. Not just underprivileged kids. For f%&ks sake. Do you even have a kid in middle in school in FCPS? |
For everyone saying it's only the at-risk kids' programs getting cut, you are 100% wrong. MSAS is a program that all middle schoolers in FCPS can use. If you don't have a kid in FCPS, get off this thread. |
I have two kids in FCPS MS. And if you read the actual budget proposal, it indicates that the county funds would go away because FCPS already provides other MS after-school activities OUTSIDE/IN ADDITION TO the MSAS program. All MS after school activities are not being cut. FFS. |
No one said they were, but MSAS is a great program and UMC kids participate and get a lot out of it. Can you pipe down? Do you want MSAS to go away? And if you do, can you say why? |
My husband's job is funded through the msas program. We were trying to figure out which after school activities are being referred to in this quote because as far as he knows everything is under msas meaning all after school activities will be cut if this budget goes through |
Other after school options are very specific, though, like Appian Board Games club is funded by a grant or robotics through a partnership with Capitol One...the regular variety of clubs at MS now - like volleyball, battle of the books, karaoke, D&D, etc. etc. - will not exist without MSAS. So many of those kids who are doing something safe and productive with other kids will be unsupervised and with far fewer options. |
This was also my understanding. As far as I can tell, it's everything. I think people are little shocked and are trying to rationalize it by saying it couldn't possibly be all MSAS. But it looks like it is. School board has very little info and is planning on talking to the BOS. |
Can they cut the buses but leave the staffing and activities parts of the MSAS budget? |
Volleyball is one of the only athletic activities our MS kids have. Ugh. This makes me so mad. |
Please raise hell about this. Honestly, middle school kids are always getting the shaft because it's "only two years" but it's such a tough time. They needs these activities. They need the engagement, the exercise, the supervision. Our kid would be coming home to an empty house. She would be fine. She's a good kid. But can't we provide something for these kids? We live in one of the richest counties in America, FFS. Where are my tax $ going?!? |
I'm not in favor of these activities getting cut, but I think kids needing activities is a little over dramatic. Maybe some kids do, but not all do, I get that some kids may need constant supervision, but engagement and exercise do not need to come from activities. |
