Americans, does it bother you when immigrants complain about America?

I’ve heard this too. This man explained to me how his sisters weren’t like American girls, they were conservative about sex. He said it like it was a common opinion. He was from Eritrea.

Um, see the other threads talking about kids having sex at ages as young as 12, mothers buying vibrators for their daughters, and parents providing space and privacy for their teenagers to have sex. Maybe you haven’t seen it, but it’s out there.

Sure, and then there is the systematic rape of young (and older) women by Eritrean defense forces, unprosecuted incest, and the widespread practice of female genital mutilation.

I guess you could say it's worse to allow your child privacy for masturbation than to cut off her clitoris, but it seems kind of misguided, no?

The practice of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in Eritrea has been declining since initial data were collected in 1995. The percentage of girls and women who have undergone FGM/C declined from 95 percent in 1995 to 89 percent in 2002 and 83 percent in 2010.

Which, of course, does not restrict an immigrant from that country from raising criticism about US practices. It's just that doing so with an air of superiority or disgust in comparison to their home country is entirely, entirely inappropriate.

What's he running from? Why would a man consider the US to be "too permissive" and laud a country where FGM is still fairly standard for women?

How do you complain, OP? Do you say “we eat too much sugar here” or “they eat too much sugar”? If you have gotten your citizenship (which is an involved process) but by your words and thoughts you are still othering yourself and not describing yourself as part of the group (and usually in a superior way), then yeah, I roll my eyes hard and see you as a green card bandit. Policy is a different beast, as most Americans can’t agree on those, but when I hear the variations on “you people are all so loud/fat/stupid/not well-travelled” I do have to wonder why you decided to stay.

When I hear someone use the term anti-patriotic, I think that person must be MAGA. OP, is your husband far right republican? How long have you been married? Just a heads up that some white men (but not all), marry minority women because they expect a passive wife.

I still don't know we allow women out of the home unescorted. And don't get me started on driver's licenses. It just a slippery slope. Next they will want to hold political office.

One of my coworkers told me "A smart lady like you should be home raising children, not working. Your husband must not be thinking right."

Many of the comments people make here are valid. However, there is an extreme American fragility held by a small number of people on this site. Just look at the thread about how British people cuss so colourfully. See the responses about them being obscene, elitist, emotionally repressed or white racists. A few people just can’t handle Americans being the best at everything.

Yes I do and I have no qualms about telling you that you are free to return to your home country. I have lived all over the world and my philosophy was very simple: I was a guest in that country and, as such, would behave as a guest and never complaint to a citizen if that country.

You might try to adopt my philosophy. The worst part is that you will become a citizen of a country you dislike and find our customs,food, and style offensive to your very delicate senses and a martyr to love because the man you married lives in a first world country! Millions of people would give anything to live here. We have a lot of problems.but having lived in Europe, Asia, and South America, I know the United States of America is the best place to live.

I'm am a citizen but here but naturalized citizens should keep their complaints to themselves because not one single person held a gun to OP's head forcing her to become a citizen of a country she finds so beneath her.

Nope. A citizen is a citizen and we have all the same rights as you. If I don’t like something I will use all avenues available to me to change it.

Well. Maybe OP should be attempting to adapt to the US instead of criticizing. She was in the country for years prior to becoming a citizen and she hated it but was more than willing to take advantage and use the country and it's citizens for her pursuit of happiness. Maybe her husband begged her to be become an
American citizen but none of the other 330,000,000 plus US citizens begged her to grace the country with her "oh so lofty" presence!
