I think that people who are criticizing her looks are trying to act as gatekeepers to keep women who don’t have certain conventional pretty faces from claiming attractive men. That’s the problem with merely pretty: it’s never truly beautiful.

I think it’s fat women with denial/cope about how much being thin factors into male attraction.

Of course you haven't. You're not trying to date DCUM weirdos who break out the measuring tape looking for asymmetries whenever a woman is on the screen.

Yes, that’s the sort of guy I could see her with, but not the actor who plays Dex.

Taylor Swift is not beautiful.
She’s fine, she’s attractive, she cleans up well but she is not a generational beauty.

Yeah you don’t know who is saying she is attractive. It could be a large ugly women or a very ugly man saying she is pretty.

The actress is below average looking, not below average for a movie star, below average for everyday normal people.

Men will date anything. All the beauty standards are just designed by women as ways to keep other women down.

I used to think the same until I went to her concert. She is stunning.

I can assure you fat women are well familiar with how many men will marry butterface thin women over truly gorgeous larger women. Why are you so firm in denying that she may be considered attractive to a portion who have said on this post that they would date her based on looks alone.

There are some gorgeous Indian actresses and models. Emma is not one of them.

What do most of these women have in common?

They don't have small facial features. They have larger eyes and noses.

To me, these are all beautiful women.

Not every woman will look like Christy Brinkley. Who is the equivalent Christy Brinkley today?

This Emma character is below average looking for a normal person. That’s why she is getting a lot of negative attention.

I would say Kendall Jenner and Gigi hadid are the supermodels of today.

So you need to have a good surgeon these days.

I don’t make beauty standards. Kendall is the supermodel of this generation.

Margot Robbie...yes. Taylor Swift is pretty average looking. I had to Google Gerber but she is disgustingly skinny and average looking. As a straight dude, I'd prefer the Emma actress to her.

This thread has really shaken some women who have been led their entire lives and by their surrounding culture into believing that the beauty standards to which they strive won’t please rich white men.
It’s obvious that some rich white men don’t prefer SEC sorority girl looks. That’s always been the case. And it clearly drives women batty.

Asian American here. It doesn’t drive me batty. I just don’t think Emma is attractive at all.

DH’s best friend is Indian. Dh is a physician and have many Indian friends with attractive wives. This Emma character is average at best for real life, not onscreen.

Have no idea about their personalities on the show, but I think she looks nice and that's the kind of looks match I see in public all the time.

Another man here and I agree. Never heard of the show, the characters or the actors, but I googled and was expecting a wildebeest. She's a regular looking woman that many men would happily date.

+1. The way some (I assume) women talk about other women's appearance on her is totally foreign to me as a man. She's cute.

She’s attractive. She wouldn’t have issues dating anyone as long as she had a good personality!

So true.

It's bizarre and pretty gross how obsessed one poster is about the supposed mismatch. They were both imperfect people who found a connection.

From the article above:
And, you know, I think you also sort of have a double whammy in this adaptation of it where I’m, you know…a lot of people who know the story and read the book or watched the film, probably didn't picture an Emma who looked like me, and I've seen some of that more critical reception. But it's a tale as old as time. We just do not give female characters or just women in general the same respect as we do male characters, especially in the show when you've got two characters like Emma and Dex, who were so equal. They are both the leads, they're both leading the story, and then you see the way in which they're talked about, sometimes I felt like, I'm in the ’80s—do you know what I mean?"
