Bring Back Loss of Credit for Skipping Class!

Instead, advocate to state officials to allow students to drop out at 15. If they don't want to be in school, let them go.

I’m a teacher and I agree with this. We rarely had kids drop out who were college ready. The ones who did were years and years behind Roth no chance of catching up. Ex: 9th and 10th graders reading on elementary levels. If you looked into their attendance records, the story was clear. They missed 1/3 to 1/2 of nearly every school year since starting school. These kids are better off being taught a trade and earning money from the beginning.

I have talked to admin. Their response: there is nothing we can do. Hall sweeps? Forget about it. Kids will just “leave” so why have them?

Our school has already said no to 0%. School wide we are still doing 50% because of “equity.”

There's the problem. Why bother having them? So the kids who are trying to learn can learn. Who cares if they leave. Send the truant officer after them.

Y'all have got to stop with this trade thing. Being taught a trade also requires responsibility and discipline. Trades are not the solution for kids who are academically behind and lacking in motivation or drive.

We wish. The lack of loss of credit and an attendance policy is what is hurting our “data” the most and burning teachers out. Absolutely ZERO accountability for students.

I don’t count on Taylor nor the BOE to ever acknowledge this. No accountability and no consequences is the new name of the game.

Where have you been? We can’t give zeroes. It will hurt their feelings. Besides, they might not be white or might have ADHD.

Half of Churchill has a 4.5 or better! Crazy.

Actually have teachers that can teach. Is that too much to ask!

Don't go there. Just stop right there. Just like posters are saying teachers can find another job, you can find another school if you are going to start with the teacher bashing already.

You cannot just find another school. Most COSAs are denied. Everyone is entitled to a public education.

No one said you weren’t. What you aren’t entitled to is the teacher of your choosing.

I don't say that as a matter of pride or happiness. But they sure as hell aren't passing.

The problem isn't the skipping as it relates to grades.

The problem is the sanctity of these institutions has been sullied by MCPS. It feels like the people who made these policies have either never worked in a high school before or haven't been in schools for like 10-15+ years.

It's dystopian seeing this. No joke, you parents here would just be so sad. I'm sure some of you would blame us staff. Go ahead if that floats your boat. It's just the policies of the district that leads to this.

Microcosm of society, really......

What do you think would help? What kind of policy reforms do you think would be effective? Do you need extra resources (cameras, something else)? More personnel (counselors, SRO’s, aides, volunteers, etc.)?

It’s hard for the public to know what’s needed, and MCPS clearly doesn’t know, but I think if someone could suggest a way to improve things, there’d be community support. With the upcoming election it might be a good time to try to see which candidates are actually interested in addressing the problem.

- Return loss of credit policy - 5 tardies = unexcused absence, 5 unexcused absences = failure of the course
- Return to final exams to hold kids accountable for their learning.
- Eliminate the 50% rule as well as the due dates/deadlines. 0% for work not completed by due date, period.
- Eliminate endless retakes. Some revisions and retakes may be acceptable, but kids know they can do this repeatedly, without limitation.
- Give administrative detentions or other concrete consequences for kids who are tardy or missing class.
- Return to assigning classes based on ability/achievement rather than lumping everyone into 'Honors' that isn't really honors.
- Stop focusing on skin color at every turn and have high expectations that apply to all students
- Suspend kids from school for major infractions. (vaping/pot smoking, fighting, leaving campus, etc.).
- End the focus on 'equity' and 'restorative justice', meaning stop putting kids in a sort of group therapy session for rule-breaking. Give a clear consequence.

Feel free to add to this list.

The PP who stated that parents would be appalled to actually see what's happening in our high schools is exactly right. it's appalling.

Don't forget corporal punishment. Beat some sense into 'em.

Oh, grow up.

But 50% is still not passing.

Contact the parent and let them know. I'd want to know.

We try. TRUST ME. But when you have 150 students and 25% are late daily, that’s about 30-40 phone calls a day. No thank you.

Admin should bring back ISS. Hallway walker? Go to ISS

Thank you, Captain Obvious, for your irrelevant contribution.

There was a big fight at Sherwood that included kids who aren’t students there.

And a different student showed up to school with a knife today.

^^^
I’m more concerned about that sort of thing.

The reality is the kids go bananas in middle school and the adults lose control. If they maintained order and discipline in middle school, perhaps they could enforce it in high school?

If all else fails, send in the nuns ;0)

Why is this not in the news? Some of these schools and police have gotten good at keeping this stuff out of the media.
