Republican Hardliners Rolled and the future of McCarthy

Anonymous
WP is reporting that Matt Gaetz's motion to remove McCarthy may be payback for McCarthy's failure to interfere with the House Ethics Committee inquiry against Gaetz on a host of allegations, including sex trafficking. It's disgusting that gross, sleazy Matt Gaetz is the one to engineer the unprecedented ousting of a speaker for reasons that may include personal animus and revenge.

Background from the WP:
The Ethics Committee began investigating Gaetz in the spring of 2021 for: "allegations he engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use and accepted impermissible gifts under House rules, among other allegations."

"The secretive congressional investigation was paused while the Justice Department carried out a related investigation of Mr. Gaetz’s conduct, including allegations involving sex trafficking and sex with a minor. In February, the Justice Department decided not to bring charges against Mr. Gaetz after concluding they could not make a strong enough case in court.

Once the Justice Department inquiry ended, the Ethics Committee resumed its work but "has not yet reached out to a key witness at the center of the most serious allegations against Mr. Gaetz."

The only way he becomes Speaker is if he can either convince the Freedumb Caucus to trust him (and risk getting screwed by them) or by convincing Dems to support him (not likely to happen)

DP. But I agree he’s the most likely candidate. However, he has myeloma.

It’s a very treatable cancer and he should be able to live for a long time, hopefully. Whether he wants to waste it on these morons is another question.

Good point.

Madam speaker, you were the best!

And we Democrats were part of the party that caused Will Rogers to say, "I don't belong to any organized political party. I'm a Democrat." Well, no longer...but now some of the sane Republicans will elect someone else, and the far right will continue to throw tantrums.

There are not enough sane republicans to elect someone. They need votes from the far right.

This right here is why you should join democrats in demanding fair maps for elections. Your hardliners were put into place by gerrymandered maps.

All roads lead to Russia.

Some delicious irony that Gaetz makes a motion to vacate based on McCarthy working with Democrats, and then needs all the Democrats to vote to push McCarthy out.

Instead, they offer a presidential candidate who is facing multiple legal charges, a minority senate leader who has one foot in the grave, and a slim majority in the House that is characterized by infighting and disarray. Way to go, Repugs! Why should anyone believe you'd be able to deliver on anything but political theater?

Well said

Nonetheless: McCarthy losing his position as speaker of the house because he chose to keep government running even though he must have known the MAGAs would never forgive him - reflects well on him and his legacy.

He has done some crazy stuff but he chose to keep government running, which many MAGAs don’t want to do.

I don’t think they realize that a healthy private sector requires a functioning public sector. Companies need educated healthy employees, safe roads and airways for transporting trades goods, safe food supplies, and many other functions of government.

He doesn’t deserve any credit. He didn’t do anything. It’s a basic 45-day CR with nothing controversial in it or about it. Not one disputed issue in the full year budget is resolved. It didn’t take courage to put an extension on the House floor. It just took a minimal connection to reality. It should have been done last Wednesday or Thursday by an easy voice vote. He delayed doing the obviously necessary thing to pander to the idiots in his caucus while they had a dumbass “impeachment” hearing instead of dealing with the end of the fiscal year.

There’s a Speaker Pro Tempore, Rep. McHenry of North Carolina.
