The self-checkout was fine when it was more convenient for the customer - i.e. - you needed a gallon of milk and it was faster to scan and pay on your own. But now it's just a degradation of service versus a convenience for the customer and a way of depriving a person of a job by the corporation. I feel like starting a movement to boycott self-checkout.

Almost everyone on here hates self-checkout (the scanners are different) - so why not? We all complain but then we just go along with what the corporation wants us to do. We don't have to.

I drove 30 min each way to Sam’s Club twice this week to avoid Giant. It’s close to my house but overpriced and I’m having the same issue with the self checkout. It never works. Sam Clubs has the scanner app right on your phone. The entire thing is a stupid waste of time, both the giant check out and driving 30 min for groceries.

Not a regular shopper at Giant, but have used the scanner thing when i do shop there. Seems like the scanner is easiest to shoplift a few items and wonder if it will still be around much longer.

Love Samsclub for the scan with phone function. Wish Costco had the same.

Same. I have stopped going there. The disgusting smell near the meat department and the annoying scanner were too much. Wegmans in Tysons now. Or Balducci’s.

For me it was the disgusting smell coming from the hot food area in the Giant I used to go to that made me nauseous standing in line at the deli counter.

You scan your Giant card when you pick up the scanner. Then you scan (and bag) your groceries while you shop around the store. When you're ready to check out, you push a button on the scanner and it pops up a barcode that you then scan at the self-checkout. It pulls your whole order up on the screen quickly and you proceed to pay as normal. It's super easy.

I heard you have to have an ID to activate it now, is that true? I tried scanning the barcode on my phone/on the Giant app and it wouldn't let me.

I have not needed an ID, no. I use my Giant card that's on my keyring (I haven't tried it with the mobile app card).

NP. Yay, yet another app to load. Some of us loathe everything having to be done via app. Oh well, we know we're in the minority but it's just another thing that adds to the suckiness of the shopping experience.

I find the Giant app very helpful to select online coupons for the week. The discounts are applied when you scan your card at the store.

My local Walmart has one checker and 50 self check out centers. Walmart is way worse than Giant.

I waited in line for 15 mins for the checker last week because I had a cart full of items. And to make it worse they have 50 self checkouts and about 25 employees doing nothing other than standing around eye hawking customers as they wrestle with the machines. While one sole checker has a line 20 deep of people waiting to check out.

The optics are so bad but they don’t seem to care. They get paid for standing around doing nothing other than staring at their hand held monitoring devices. It so odd. Dystopian. A sign of the times.

They’ve sunk so far from the cheery midwestern origins of the smiley octogenarian Walmart greeter.

So you are a common thief/shoplifter. I hope you get caught.

You all realize grocery stores operate on very thin margins (pennies on most items). And from those slim margins, they have to pay rent, pay staff, pay liability and health insurance, electricity, etc. You want to turn the suburbs into food deserts like the inner cities?

Those are disappearing at my Giant and getting harder to find. I asked and they said was due to theft. People just walk out with them and keep them so they may do away with those too.
