Williamsburg, VA. William and Mary is right there.

I love that area. Are the schools good?

It's also too expensive unless there is a town outside the area

+1

It's only 4 years away, just rent for now and buy when the school district doesn't matter anymore.

I need cash. I can’t afford rent and utilities and food and activities. I’d like to sell the house and buy somewhere with no mortgage

Don't see how that makes sense. If you need the cash, isn't it best to take on a new smaller mortgage instead of plunking down $300k?

I can't do that anymore.

NP: why not? Also, what is your industry?

Construction

You're telling me there's no construction jobs in Pittsburgh? That seems unlikely.

College towns. There will always be good schools available because profs require it. Might be private, though.

Thank you

You can get that in the Cleveland/Akron/Canton Ohio suburbs. The area is definitely aging so the house would likely need some updates - but there are definitely homes under $300k there and in pretty good school districts too.

Oakland County, Michigan, specifically houses zoned for
Rochester Community Schools
Troy School District
West Bloomfield

I also like Berkeley School district, it's underrated and ofc Grosse Pointe schools are excellent but it's $$$

Where can we move where I can afford to outright buy my house and still find decent jobs and schools and activities nearby? My friend lives in upstate NY and tells me to head up there where there are many houses for $200k. The schools there are hit or miss and the job market is a little low and it's cold. What other areas of the country can I look at?

Many such places in FL and the South IF "house" includes condos/ townhouses, "great schools" means not worse than DMW, and you're looking for "jobs" in the private sector.

I wouldn't even consider upstate NY.
