I attended a really interesting talk at work before the pandemic, by a few professors l from AU and l think Howard.

This paper “Dog Parks and Coffee Shops: faux diversity and consumption in gentrifying neighborhoods”

The wealthier people move in and so does Whole Foods, Starbucks and dog parks. The old residents don’t patronize these more expensive establishments. So there is segregation within the faux diverse neighborhood. This is based on their research of gentrifying DC neighborhoods. Their point was both sets of people should talk to each other, be friendly, go into each others spaces and learn about them.

I didn't call the cops on the three-day block party in my gentrifying Charleston neighborhood and on the third night, we were woken up by a mass shooting next door, 12 people shot, more than 50 rounds and the screams of victims. As I scrambled up the stairs to make sure no bullets had passed through my children's bedroom walls, I patted myself on the back for being such an ally.

People also don't want to be shot by 13 year old carjackers or have their kids mowed down by ATVs walking home from school. The increasing disorder and lawlessness is the most pressing problem in DC.

London, Paris, Hong Kong. All even more urban than DC and they would not tolerate these levels of violence and filth.

Many gentrifier's say they want diversity, while acknowledging that their very presence increases property values beyond the reach of many, if not most people of color. Sadly,you are the death knell of urban diversity. Like it or not, it's a fact that whenever you show up (choose your own historical year up to 2023), wherever you show up (pick any culture i.e. Petworth locally), non-whites suffer.

Those are hardworking folks with jobs. Given the fact that they have jobs, they aren’t poor. The PP you are responding to is likely referring to the very low IQ folks that do thinks like carjacking etc. We would all be better off without them.
