^^^ this is why people should probably just move if they dont agree with reduced policing. MoCo is absolutely enacting a plan to further reduce police contact with residents in the less wealthy areas. As you can see, this is a welcome measure by many residents. I sold my house and left. It will only get worse from here in terms of crime. But thats what democracy us about. The people have spoken. |
They are making police contact equal to the all white areas. |
What does that mean? |
This happened in Bethesda. Yes I would love for cops to pull over ever car in Bethesda and start arresting those women with wine on their breath. |
How often do people in white areas like Bethesda have contact with a cop? Rarely. Why? It’s nit because Wootton students aren’t smoking pot. It’s because they are white and Asian. They don’t harass Wootton students, why harass Blair students? |
Do you know what pretext stops are? |
You are correct. This is quoted directly from the Task Force language: “Reduce sworn officer FTEs in police Districts 3 and 4 by 50 % to reduce patrol officer contact with residents in these districts.” The problem, according to the writers of this document, is the police department. |
This is victim blaming. The man was going out to dinner with his family. At a reasonable hour. I went to college in nyc in the 90s, lived in the mission in SF and near East Rogers park in Chicago. I’m careful about going out after dark and using transit, but to be honest I did use it and I did walk alone (I’m a small woman). I’m now raising my kids in DC in a neighborhood where violent crime has escalated steeply (as well as theft). It is deeply disturbing. These are our communities — we are a multiracial family and have lived in our neighborhood for 20 years. Don’t you want working families and seniors to be able to live in DC and DTSS? Don’t you want local businesses to thrive? Or should we just let these places become criminal wastelands? How would that serve equity and social justice? |
The guy who shot the gas station clerk and murdered his pregnant lover committed both of those crimes two minutes from a police station. |
There is a pretty significant and constant police presence throughout downtown Bethesda. My guess is that most “contacts” are occurring when police respond to a call. I would not be surprised if there were more calls in areas that are higher crime. I would also dispute the idea that MCPD are just randomly harassing high school students. |
2 minutes from is not almost literally kitty corner from. |
Well you would be wrong. Cops in SS were practicing what is called stop and frisk and pretext stops . This is not done in other areas in moco. Do you know what stop and frisk is? Do you know what pretext stops are? |
Well I was a teen doing exactly what you want your kids to do during a time that crime was much hire. Life’s full of risks, it’s not victim blaming it’s facts. |

This has been my plan even before this incident, although high housing prices and interest rates have made me pessimistic about how quickly I can make my move. I think it's incredibly dumb to reduce policing, but if that's what SS residents want, then it's clear to me that SS is no longer the right place for me. Interestingly, people always complain that housing prices don't appreciate in poorer areas to the same extent as in wealthier areas, and this is exactly why. A huge factor in where people choose to live is safety, but if the people of SS want to believe that there is some sort of rampant problem whereby upstanding, well-behaved black kids are harrassed by police, such that a reduction in the police force is necessary, then so be it. |
