I am so scared! My dentist said it will be quick and he will be using local anesthesia. I’m 37 and been told to remove them for a long time and I’m finally going for it!! How long will recovery be? |
I did this at 35, novocaine only, and got all 4 wisdom teeth out. I was breastfeeding a newborn, so didn’t want anesthesia or opioids. I only took Tylenol and Advil after (there is a protocol for stacking them that is as proven to be effective for dental pain as opioids).
The actual removal was fine, I didn’t feel anything but definitely heard some awful crunching sounds. Afterward, I felt a ton of inflammation in my gums - it was surprisingly uncomfortable. If I’d been working, I would have had to take a week off to recover. It’s not a sharp pain like a toothache, more like a dull ache like a sunburn, and I couldn’t eat for days. I couldn’t really do much other than lie down and watch TV, and nurse the baby. |
The surgery itself is no big deal. Don’t worry.
But, the recovery prob worse than you would expect. I was swollen and in pain and couldn’t leave the house for 4-5 days. But, then it’s totally fine. |
Is it impacted? If not it's no big deal at all
|
I had my right side wisdom teeth removed a few months ago at 34. Had also been told to do it for years. I opted for anesthesia. Was given Tylenol with codine which I took the first day before switching to Advil/tylenol.
Upper healed no problem. Lower was quite painful to heal but ended up being partially impacted. |
This!! The crunching sound was the worst part. I had 2 removed under local. I'm 51. I was fine in a matter of hours once the bleeding stopped. I didn't have to take any of the pain meds they prescribed-just Ibuprofen. I was able to eat a soft bagel for dinner that night. I only had one side done so was able to chew on the other side. Ate normally the next day although again on the other side. It was probably about 4-5 days before I could fully chew hard things again on the removed side. I had no issues healing and went to the gym as usual the next day. |
You're gonna be ok op. If you are not driving yourself can try to take Benadryl a hour before to help take the edge off. Also make sure you take Tylenol an hour before and Advil or Aleve a hour after. Ice your face. Get sleep you will be ok in a few days. |
I did it at 48 a few years ago and it wasn’t that bad. Ask your surgeon for Exparel, it’s worth the money. |
I am absolutely terrified of the dentist’s chair however I let a wisdom tooth 🦷 get infected by trying to ignore the pain (due to my fear) and one day the pain was so excruciating I had to have the tooth pulled immediately.
Yup, I just walked into a random dental office + told them I was in extreme pain. My own fault. Anyway it was the first time I had ever had a tooth pulled in my entire life (I am 55!) I expected huge pain during as well as afterward > but it was all pain free! I had the anesthesia only in my mouth so afterward once it went away, I just made sure to take the antibiotics + ibuprofen that was prescribed. I went to work the next day and never felt a thing in the following days. However I only had just ONE tooth removed. If you are having multiple teeth pulled your outcome may be different. Good luck. |
OP how are you? |
I had all mine pulled (impacted) when I was 17 only. Local only. You'll be just fine. |
Ugh I could not do that without general. Good luck! Recovery day 2 and 3 will be rough but that's the worst. Better and better from there on. |
Hi, OP here. I am home. The entire procedure took 45 minutes. I was brought inside and they gave me laughing gas for 10 minutes. Then the numbing injections. Then I waited for 20 minutes or so for the surgeon. He came in and pulled each tooth out. It took 5 seconds per tooth. They put gauze on my gums and sent me home.
I’m feeling good so far. No pain. Just can’t talk due to being numb and the gauze. |
My lower lip and chin are still numb! |
Glad it went smoothly. Hope you have a quick recovery. |
