I went to Habit Burger in Rockville last week and they asked me if I wanted grilled onions on my vegan veggie burger, but warned me they are not vegetarian. Further questions let me know they are cooked on the same grill as the burgers and are cooked with butter. I believe that sharing grills still makes something vegetarian and have NEVER received that warning at other restaurants. If you are not at a vegan restaurant, you should assume it's all cooked in the same grill and same fryer as meat. I found this really strange they call it "not vegan" instead of "not vegetarian" because the butter, but I confirmed it on the website. What do others think?

| meh. Move on. |
| I appreciate their telling me. I have gone through phases of not wanting to ingest any dairy at all. |

Most vegetarians are okay with their portabella being grilled on the same grill as the steaks. I find this similarly.
I think knowing about the butter is more important since many are dairy free for medical reasons. |
| It’s still vegetarian imo. Vegetarians eat butter. |
| I'd be thrilled they told me. It would be nice if they cooked it on a separate part of the grill but butter is not vegan so they were right to tell you. Good for them. |
I'd prefer it on a seperate part of the grill but at some point it makes it impossible to eat out if you worry about it. The issue here is the butter for vegan. |
| Have you never used a grill? Those onions have meat juice and meat bits all over them, they aren’t vegetarian or vegan. |
| When I make food for veggies I try to do it so there is no cross contamination with meat. Obviously there will be cross contamination by using the same grill. Some people may not mind getting some burger grease on their onions, but others definitely might. I think it's a nice warning to someone ordering a vegan item, obviously the butter won't be, and not everyone is ok with the same grill. |
I usually put the veggie burger or veggies on a separate part or if its at someone else's house I'll keep it on foil. Butter is vegetarian but that's what it says on the website. |
| My husband has been a vegetarian for 40 years and he would be pissed if his veggie burger on on the same surface as my steak. He would also be able to taste the meat once he took a bite. |
+1 |
| My vegetarian friend would not cook her veggies in the same fondue put as meat went in to. I don't think most restaurants have separate grills for vegetarian. I have a kosher friend who will only eat dairy in restaurants...since there is so much butter around kitchens. |
| My vegetarian family would apprecite that heads-up. Cooking onions on the same surface as beef would be considered problematic. |
| I assume that this goes on in most restaurant kitchens. |
