Nonsensical return/cancellation policy

Anonymous
I purchased some pendant lights, choosing that particular vendor only because items were 'In stock'. A few days later I received an updated e-mail, changing the shipping time to 2 months later, past the time when I want to have the lights installed.

I wrote to the company, asking to cancel the order due of the changed delivery date. The respond by saying I'm not allowed to cancel. However, I can return the items for refund once I receive them.

This is moronic. Is there something I can do?

from https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2018/12/help-avoid-online-order-slow-or-no-shows:

Look carefully at the shipping date before you order. If there’s no date given, the seller has 30 days to ship. If you’re notified about a delay in shipping, you have the right to cancel the order and get a full refund. If you decide to cancel, let the seller know right away so you won’t be billed.

It's getting very common in the plumbing and electrical fittings space that websites don't actually stock anything, everything is drop-shipped from the manufacturer. They show stuff as "in stock" when really it's just available from the manufacturer.

The other thing you might run into is that if you try to buy the same fixture from other websites none of them really have it in stock either and they're all going to be waiting for the manufacturer to get it back in stock.

And the reason the website doesn't want to just cancel your order and refund your money is they know what's going to happen: you're going to look on other websites and come to the realization that you're going to have to wait if you order from any of them, so you'll pick one. And it probably won't be them. They figure by creating a bit of friction you end up in the same place anyway but buy from them instead of one of their competitors.

How did you not read the return policy before ordering?

It's not the return policy, it's the cancellation policy.

The cancellation policy is that orders can't be cancelled after they've been made. You have to take delivery and then return the fixtures, which the return policy allows. The bait and switch was that the website showed them as in stock, then once the order was made they said delivery wouldn't be for two months.
