Va household tax and ex

Anonymous
My ex rents a room from me and does literally the least. Divorced over a decade. He proposed an offer in compromise to VA for back taxes and they denied it based on my income.
We do not live in Va and have not for sometime
They tied my income to his via household. Does this sound right? We are not together and I strive to be ambivalent over open disdain for him and his crap. He voiced object but VA “customer service” said we had the same last name and address.

Is this going to impact my tax situation? He is supposed to pay 1200 a month but has missed almost 9 months this year.

Is this just his tax? Sounds like it. If so, why are you trying to help someone you dislike and who refuses to fix his own problems?

I have no idea how VA taxes work (so I guess I should stop there), but my first step would probably be to send a copy of the divorce decree to the VA tax department to make sure that they don't think you have any responsibility for his tax debt.

Your ex should be doing something similar, but I can see where VA might think that if the two of you are living together and still have the same last name, then your income isn't as separate from his as he claims.

And thanks for the reminder that as much as my own divorce sucked, at least I'm not renting a room ten years later to a deadbeat ex who "literally does the least." Sounds like a messy situation (although I'm sure there are reasons for it).

I’m a chump. But this isn’t the relationship forum. Thanks guys.-op

There is no mechanism in VA to file joint personal taxes with someone other than a legal spouse. You are not liable for his taxes unless they are old martial debts. Residence is irrelevant.

That was my thought but they denied his offer I compromise saying that we are a household. It did seem arbitrary. Now I think he will send them our divorce decree but I don’t live in VA and do not want them to have access to anymore of my information.
This was for taxes he is responsible for/ earned after our divorce. Years after.
