I rented a car about a month ago and used my own EZ Pass VA transponder in the rental. I removed the EZ Pass VA transponder when I returned the rental and put it back in my own car. I just noticed that about $200 in tolls from that rental car license plate for later dates and other states were posted to my EZ Pass account. I contacted EZ Pass BA and they said I should have taken the rental car license plate number off my account. They will not reverse the fraudulent tolls. I have provided my rental car receipt as proof.
Is there any government agency or way to fight fraudulent charges? Are there consumer rights on EZ Pass? |

this is not fraud. This is how EZ pass works - a transponder is tied to a specific license plate. If you want to use your personal ez pass in a car that you don’t own, you need to enroll that license plate and tie it to your EZ pass account and then take it off when you are done. Sounds like you failed to do that.

Many places are "pay by plate" now, not the electronic transponder. That's probably what happened.
I stopped taking my own EZ pass with me because the savings just aren't that much. |
| It’s because of the rental car’s license plate being charged to your account. You need to contact the rental car company and see if they’ll take up the charges. I’ve been charged for tolls from rental companies before - they just send me an invoice after I rent the car and I submit payment to the rental company. So really they are the ones who should charge the correct customers and reimburse you. |
My transponder was not left in the car. Why even have a transponder if they will charge tolls by a license plate number only? |
Did you log into EZ pass to add the rental car to your account while your were using it? If so, it's your fault for not deleting it. If not, I'd keep on challenging it |
+1 Call the rental car company. They will most likely be able to resolve this. |
Because some tolls roads are pay by plate and some have the overhead transponder readers. |

In my state, the pay by plate is much more expensive than if you use the transponder. If you associated the rental car plate number with your account, that’s why it kept charging you for the tolls.
You haven’t answered whether or not you added that license plate number to your account and removed it when you return the car. |

I'm experiencing a similar issue, after retuning the rental car, I deleted the plate number off of the account and took the transponder out of the car. However, I am still being billed for tolls and I don't understand why. Is there a way to dispute these charges?

EZ Pass are scum of the earth. They charged me $260 westbound on 66 when I had 5 people in the car. Each person I spoke with basically laughed at me and said we took your money what are you gonna do.
So I started cc'ing the VA AG office on the mails and voila, my funds were returned. |
