Waitlisted NYU

What are the chances of getting off the list? No info on CDS? Anyone with experience?

Close family friend got in last year off WL. NYU asks you to update which schools there you would attend (broaden the list if it's authentic) and write a small paragraph as to why you would consider other schools there. What has changed since you applied. Be authentic.

It is believed by students there that Liberal Studies, Gallatin, Steinhardt are easier to get into vs. CAS and Stern (1.5 to 2x higher overall acceptance rate). S

tudy away 1st year also helps NYU because it offloads their very full NYC housing situation. NYU also loves full pay....but that's not a changeable factor!

Good luck. WL acceptances dripped in every day around May 2 to May 8 last year.

Thank you. Very helpful!

Thanks! DD was waitlisted. This is helpful.

Really depends on the program. Stern, CS, Tisch film are tough waitlists.

NYU is a huge school and wait list does move but as mentioned certain schools are easier. People do get scared off by the expensive tuition and high cost of living there. And NYU has very low endowment compared to size so loves full pay students.

NYU is very expensive as compared to in-state school. I wonder if it is worth going there for Undergrad?

Galatin full pay. If you can swing itl.

It’s lightning! Always was.

I graduated 1992 when the school got no love. But even then, my classmates were wonderful. They have all had rich and/or successful (depends how you measure🙃) lives.

DD got off the WL in 2021 for school of liberal arts. She would have had to spend the first semester at a different location (DC or overseas were options) and full pay. She was happy to be selected, but decided not worth being full pay for her major. It may well be worth it for other majors.

She did submit a LOCI with updates of awards etc.

Could she pick another major after getting into the college or you are not allowed to switch from what you said is your intended major when applying?

I graduated from NYU twenty years ago and at that time students had free reign to declare double majors later on. The only real restriction was trying to double-major in something from Stern from outside of Stern (there was some sort of separate approval process).

I was in Tisch and took a bunch of cross-courses in School of Arts and Sciences and School of Ed. Flirted with doing a 2nd major in CS and Econ. Ended up getting a double-major in Film/TV and Political Science. Given that they offer Gallitin, the university generally had a pretty open view about allowing people to change majors or add a double-major. Leaving one school for another is a bit tricky if you want to transfer into something very popular (Stern) or lots of pre reqs (Engineering).

It is a bit more restrictive coming out of the 2-year program in SLS.
