smARTSummer MCPS

My child with ADHD, PDA and anxiety got offered a 4th grade spot for music at the smARTSummer MCPS. Has anyone had a kid in this summer music camp before? How did your child do?

I had never heard about this camp. My ES kid attends MCPS and loves music - and I see now after googling that registration opened on 3/11 and is now full. How did you even hear about this program? I feel like MCPS is not equitable in sharing what's available

My DD has done it for 2 years and loves it. She will be going this year as well. Out of all the camps she has done, this one is her favorite. She even loves the before/after care.

I found out about the program because I got a flyer sent home. I figured it was because DD is in a title 1 school bit a friend who child was not in a title 1 school also got the notification. The following year and this year as well, nothing ever got sent home (my school is not super organized) and luckily we got notification by the program itself because we had been in it before.
I noticed that even though my DD's school was close by to the location many of the kids came from schools further out - and maybe their school publicized it better.

This year looks a little different, maybe because of Budget cuts. It's 8 days instead of 10, they have decreased the amount of kids and for the younger grades they are combining music and art vs having a choice of one or the other. The location has also changed from Gaithersburg HS to Blair.

Great to know! Do you feel they did a good job attending to anything related to her diagnoses?

I found out via social media from MCPS

I'm the PP. It's a small program that has some teachers and high schoolers that earn SSL hours. They don't have the man power to attend to anything too out of the ordinary but will definitely try to help. They were struggling last year because some families would pull their kids for appointments mid day and what not and they are not staffed to be able to manage that kind of stuff. There is a director but no office staff. My child has general/social anxiety and felt very much at home with the teachers/high schoolers and kids. Many of the kids are now repeats so she has gotten to know them. In the past there has been a performance on the last day and my DD now feels much more comfortable being on stage.
