I have been looking everywhere for an in person therapist on Capitol Hill for my 9 year old and can not find anyone who can help. I found someone who can do therapy for her but virtually. Has anyone experienced virtual therapy for an elementary school aged child? I feel like it would not be as effective but would love feedback. |
Sounds terrible and borderline unethical to even offer it
|
Why? My DD started with her therapist pre covid in person, but since then it’s been all online. It’s so convenient and the same talk happens. Why do you consider it unethical? |
That's extreme! |
It won't be as effective. If effective at all. |
Depends on the kid. I'm generally in favor of in-person therapy but I certainly can see the other side. |
It does depend on the kid. I have one DC who has done both. In our experience, in person is better than virtual, but virtual is better than none, if you have a kid who is willing to engage. I am frustrated by how many therapists are now virtual only when working with kids. |
My DD started seeing her therapist virtually during COVID and we've decided to stick with it because it seemed to be more effective than in person for her. I imagine it varies by the child, but I don't see a reason to not try. They aren't doing anything in therapy in person that can't be done online. It's just talking |
If it's truly just talking, it is fine (virtual works for my teenager and I prefer it for myself). But many 9 year olds need to do something, not just talk (when my kid was 9, games were an integral part of therapy). I would ask the therapist how she keeps young children engaged in virtual therapy. |
My 9 yo dd does really well with her virtual therapist!
The therapist is a good fit and knows how to keeps kids engaged-there are games and things. Due to schedules, distance and time, I was unable to find an in person therapist. This virtual therapist has been amazing! |
