What to do with a HUGE portrait and diplomas in small apartment?

Anonymous
I have a really, really large portrait of myself as a child, plus all of my framed diplomas and awards from work (I still work, but I'm remote, so I don't have an office with space to hang them in). I live in a small apartment. It feels wrong to throw these things away. What have you done with these things?

Mine are in a closet. Mostly. The diplomas are easy. The pictures are harder. I’ll be reading this thread with interest.

Is this the apartment where you plan to die? If so, figure out somewhere to hang them. If not just wrap them and stack them on the floor or a high shelf within a closet.

How is the portrait made-- oils, watercolor, pencil, etc? That will determine how to store it.

As for the diplomas and awards, take them out of their frames and box them up with acid-free tissue paper in between.

No! I definitely don't plan to die here.

Storage unit. I don’t even know where one of my diplomas is anymore.

Oils. But what is anyone ever going to do with any of these things? I don't have the space to display them, but no one other than me will ever want to. The frames were expensive. If my daughter ever wanted to display them at some point (meaning, in like 20 years), she'd want them in the frames because those frames were expensive!

Do you ever plan to hang them? I have zero interest in hanging items you described so I got rid of them. I hate saving things just because. If I don't need it or want it, they are gone.

Do you really think your daughter is going to want to display an old painting of you as a child or your diplomas?

No. Don't be a storage unit person! If you can't fit all your crap in your home then you have too much crap and need to get rid of it.

Hang the diplomas in your study area. Box up the large portrait and place in closet or under a bed.

We display some large family oil portraits in our small house, but they're old (19th century). There's an oil painting of my mom as a toddler in my parent's house now and I don't think we'd put it up whenever I inherit it.

If you didn’t want to save the frames I’d say remove the diplomas and awards and roll them into a cardboard tube. But honestly there is pretty much zero chance your daughter will want to display your awards and/or diplomas when she is older. Maybe sell the frames?

This is OP. Probably not!

Nah you put it in storage and then realize you’re never going to use it and get tired of paying the bill so you can finally discard. It’s a process.
