Band Camp

Anonymous
My 10yo DS attends MCPS with an IEP for HFA, ADHD, GAD. He started in band this year and really likes it. He is playing the clarinet but maybe wants to try some other instruments. He has had a few lessons on some other instruments and in voice in the past and can read music. He loves his band class and really loves being part of a group. Is there a good band camp someone can recommend? An understanding, nurturing environment and a teacher who will respect him and not be annoyed with his mild learning differences would be great. We are in the Bethesda area.

OP my child is 12 and also attends a MCPS school with an IEP for ADHD. He has been in band at school since 4th grade and he loves it. He started with clarinet, but has switched to Bass clarinet this year because it's bigger and louder than the clarinet.
His band teacher has been sending emails with summer camp opportunities for the students; you can try
UMD Terrapin Camp, https://music.umd.edu/communityengagement/summer-programs/terrapin-music-camp.
Gallery Winds, www.gallerywinds.com
Try asking his band teacher if she knows of any other program or contact the feeder middle school or high school band teacher.

Maybe Landon?

If he's interested in trying new instruments you might take a look at school of rock. Very supportive and accommodating environment. His peers are there.

Luther College in Iowa has a sleepaway band camp for a week in June if he’s ready for that. Nerdy sweet kids. Lots of ASD.

Thank you for all these suggestions. The one I found online closest to us is Bach to Rock? Anyone have any reviews of this place/their summer camp?
