Could someone help me understand the pathway

Could someone help me understand the pathway for a northern VA boy who wants to play pro? I know there is zero chance he’ll be able to turn pro but just wanted to have a big picture idea. I thought there must be a million pictures online but I couldn’t find anything helpful. Thanks!

Play on a MLS Next or ECNL team. If ECNL make sure they are partners with a MLS academy team. Go to the bigger tourneys and stand out. Get noticed by MLS academy scouts, go on trial. Stand out. Get offer from academy team. Stand out. Get signed to their second or first team. Boom, pro.

If you have dual citizenship, go to Europe. If not, have to wait until 18 to play in Europe.

You can’t find anything helpful because it’s a made up term by people who aim to separate you from your money.

Have a playing background, attend a few courses, and BOOM you are now a trusted insider who can guide along this elusive pathway. For around $3k* per year. Plus team fees. Plus uniforms.

No other sport touts this pathway nonsense. The best players will get found regardless of where they are. As they always have.

*If you want to know about the super secret shortcut along the pathway, you should attend private sessions on the side for $200 a pop.

Your kid likes soccer —> u pay money —-> ????????—-> kid goes pro.

Somewhere in the question marks is raw talent , chance, marketing, maybe college…
May be club.

But the pathway is clear… starts w 3k min a year

You all forgot the most important ingredient.

LUCK.

Right place, right time. Half of it is just showing up. Other half is somebody else cares. We don't have a real talent development path here in the US. It really is luck in many ways. Even really talented athletes fall through the cracks because they just didn't have very good luck.

Locally, MLS Next.
Definitely not college soccer.

This is a good program for high school and post high school if you’ve got money to spend.
