Grinnell

DC told me they were accepted a couple of hours ago. I don't know anything about the school but the acceptance rate is 11%. What should I know? They were also offered a large merit scholarship ($25K/year)

Diploma mill in corn country. Skip. Just send your kid to UMD.

Iowa’s answer to Oberlin and Carleton. Everyone I know who went there is brilliant and loved their time there. But very isolated.

It is a small, liberal arts school that itself is very liberal. It is 30 minutes from Des Moines but draws from all over the country.

A very wrong hot take.

It's a great school: a liberal arts college with challenging academics, a diverse & smart student body from all over the country + some internationals, and the resources to help students with research. Don't let the rural Iowa locale fool you.

It’s great. Outstanding liberal arts education, a a lovely campus, and smart, creative kids from all over the nation and world. For the right kid, the fact that they’re coming together in the unlikely Iowa location makes it more special, not less.

It’s not for everyone, but don’t take any advice from anyone who hasn’t actually been there.

You should be proud, OP. Grinnell is a tough one to pull. Did your kiddo show a lot of demonstrated interest? My DD was waitlisted

+1 I've been very impressed with every Grinnell grad I've met.

It's a highly selective school, so congrats to your daughter, but she shouldn't expect to encounter much diversity of thought there. It's as woke as Oberlin.

Congrats! My DD was also accepted. We didn’t get as much merit ($17 k).

How would it be if you aren’t woke?

How easy is it to get to and from campus from DC?

Same here, seems like DC applied by accident. Never realized their acceptance rate is so low.

How is the overall student community, any geek scene, and what should we know.

Evidently my kiddo applied as well and did not even know it. She was rejected which is not surprising given she did not complete the full applications but only a preliminary application required for an interview (but never signed up for an interview). I assume that they used the preliminary app to jack up application numbers and rejections. That being said, kid did not apply as was an athletic recruit and committed elsewhere but other than the odd rejection (odd in that she did not know she had even applied to the school) she actually liked the school.

So true. CA and NY are well represented.
