Zyrtec causing nose bleeds

Anonymous
Has anyone faced this with their child? We use Zyrtec during upper respiratory infections to control nasal inflammation but lately we are seeing that just a single dose of 10ml Zyrtec causes a gushing nose bleed within 30 mins. We have stopped using it now but we used to give it quite frequently when he was an infant to control eczema itching and it did not cause nose bleeds at that time.

Try combining with saline nose spray. It’s possible that the Zyrtec is drying out his nasal passages too quickly and causing a blood vessel close to the surface inside the nose to tear. Is it only one nostril? Lubricating the inside of the nose regularly with saline should help.

My daughter (11) has had a few random nosebleeds during allergy season over the years (I can vividly remember two of them, once when she was about 4 and once when she was 8), but this year, it seems like every time I give her Zyrtec, she gets a nosebleed within 24 hrs. I cut it down to half a pill last night, and this morning she woke up with her nose gushing. She was outside all day yesterday, and our pollen is *terrible* right now, so she's congested as well. I'm going to try Allegra tonight for her.

My kid usually gets nose bleeds during allergy season, so this may be correlation, not causatoin with the zyrtec. at the same time, certainly drying out nasal passages could cause nosebleeds.

It could be sniffling that’s causal, and taking Zyrtec is just correlated. Either way, drinking more water and using saline nose spray can help. Using plain Vaseline inside the nose can also help.

It’s the dry air and pollen/allergens causing the nosebleed not the Zyrtec.
Put a humidifier in your kids room at night. My kid had 3 nosebleeds in 3 days 2 weeks ago but it’s stopped since starting the humidifier.

+1 This happens tome and DS. We both have blood vessels near the surface of both nostrils. With the inflammation from allergies and blowing plus the antihistamines (doesn't matter which one we take), we're very prone to nose bleeds.

We use saline sprays or rinses and frequently swab the insides with Vaseline. In winter, I MUST run a humidifier round the clock in addition to the saline/Vaseline.

If it gets too bad, an ENT can cauterize the bleeder. I had it done during sinus surgery 20 years ago but experienced it again a couple years ago.

Nose gel and a humidifier

Saline isn’t ideal because it contains salt/chemicals that, paradoxically, are drying. A gel designed for nasal passages is a better solution.
