Missouri Study Weighs in on use of Propranolol (Blood Pressure) for the Presentation of Anxiety w/in Young Adults w/ ASD

Anonymous
Background: I wanted to post this here in case it could assist anyone in any conversations with medical professionals. Dr. Temple Grandin has noted in the recent video I taped at her office at Colorado State University about ways she has opined activities of daily life can assist in making the travel experience more seamless and less stressful for The Special Needs Community.

Caveat: To be clear, my expertise is in travel, and there is no intention whatsoever to opine separately. With that being said, as one of the themes I have heard repeatedly as to considerations creating barriers to travel for the Autism community has been "anxiety" associated with the crowds, noise, stimulation, etc. as present in airports, I wanted to share this link:

Headline: Randomized controlled trial of propranolol on social communication and anxiety in children and young adults with autism spectrum disorder

Conclusions of Study: Propranolol did not impact social interaction measures or language, but there were indications of a beneficial effect for anxiety. This will need confirmation in a larger multicenter trial, monitoring markers or characteristics to identify those participants most likely to respond to propranolol for anxiety, and determine whether there is a subset of participants that are responsive for other previously reported outcomes.

My 15-year-old with autism and adhd has been on propranolol for several years - at least three. His psychiatrist indicated way back that there were signs it does help and it’s a widely prescribed drug with very few side effects so there’s not a lot of downside.

Hi OP. Not directly on point, but I am an adult without ASD and take propranolol for anxiety. It is a substitute for e.g. Xanax.

Interesting. In the musical world, propranolol is sometimes used for high stress situations including solos and auditions. It is also used by public speakers. Using it for travel or for high stress situations such as stressful social situations might make sense. However, a baseline cardiac workup is important before taking it as it effects the heart.

Yeah, I have a prescription for propranolol, largely for public speaking.

Thank you all for the feedback on the original post. My goal here is to pose potentially relevant information, especially as the topic of "Anxiety" was raised by Dr. Temple Grandin in our recent interview (...as to her discussion of activities of daily life that might assist with travel...) at Colorado State University. Once again, I am not qualified to opine beyond the travel related scope of #TravelingWiki (http://www.TravelingWiki.com). As noted, I do this work for free on top of my daytime for profit job to attempt to augment access to air travel for the Special Needs Community. Thank you all again for the valuable discussion here - I am deeply passionate about this non-profit work for the Special Needs Community.

Best Regards,
Jonathan

This is actually what I take before my SN kid comes home from school in the afternoons. I started on it when things were really ugly during Covid. I don't "feel" it and have noted no side effects. YMMV

Thank you very much for that additional data point. I am going to share this discussion on a few other boards where it could potentially spark a discussion to potentially assist to augment access to air travel (with caveats noted, as above). As noted, I am deeply passionate about non-profit work in this space. Thank you again so much for this opportunity.

Jonathan
