Non-obvious packing for Hawaii

Anonymous
We will be taking our two teens to Hawaii, with connections on the west coast.

I’ve read we all want water shoes? Should bring snorkel gear or just rent there. Any other things I should bring that are not obvious?

What about the flight? Any favorite neck pillows or other gadgets? Any other things I should be thinking?

Thanks in advance.

Reef-safe sunscreen.

We rented snorkel gear. You can check online and make sure there are rental places near where you are staying. There is a great app that helps you adjust to a new time zone, I can't remember the name but I bet that would help with Hawaii.

Do you wear prescription glasses? Might want prescription snorkel mask.

We're bringing snorkel gear as we found a set we really like. Also bringing Keens as our water shoes since we can use them on hikes too. Just got our reef safe sunscreen and have water lanyard phone cases for all of us.

I packed everything I was going to want on the beach inside my luggage…but forgot to pack any type of bag to carry it all to the beach, lol.

We found it easy to rent a prescription snorkel mask. Obviously one you own would be better, but the rental places do have them. We limited ourselves to carry on only for Hawaii so space was at a premium!

I always pack turban (hair) and travel towels and bandannas.

+1 on all of the above

I think it’s called time shifter?

And make sure it is really reef safe. Sadly many, even ones sold on the island are not.

We have used and liked badger, blue lizard and think sport.

Take this with a grain of salt as we have not taken the trip yet, but we're planning Oahu/Kauai in July and have consistently seen purchasing sunscreen etc on site recommended as the ones sold in HI are all truly reef-safe. Also apparently it's a no disposable bag state, so you may want to tuck a small grocery bag in as well.

If you plan to go anywhere at altitude (and there is altititude on Maui and Hawaii), bring jackets.

We brought a mesh beach bag (mesh so sand would fall out) that was recommended here and was very cheap on Amazon. We used it a lot on the trip. I think it is pretty easy (and cheaper) to buy reef safe sunscreen here - but you can definitely buy it there too.

Not Hawaii specific ~ clips to keep the hotel drapes closed, a night light, ear plugs which I wear on the plane

Clothes pins - we were in HI last summer. I'd clip wet swim suits to the balcony chairs to keep them from blowing away.
