Thoughts On Woodberry Forest School?

I want to send my son to boarding school. Would Woodberry be a good fit for a very smart boy that wants to have a balanced high school environment? Strategically, I think it would be easier to "stand out" at Woodberry for college admissions purposes rather than going to a well-known New England boarding school such as Andover, Choate, Exeter, etc.

Woodberry seems like a good school.
I know a teacher there and he is pretty amazing.

Some pretty messed up (drugs/alcohol) kids came out of there - older generation. I’m not sure if that’s still true.

Woodberry isn’t going to make college admissions any easier than the top boarding schools.

A friend’s son goes to Woodberry Forest and they love it. He’s very smart but also athletic and it’s been a great fit for him. I don’t know about your specific question, though, regarding college admissions.

This school is a hidden gem. Nothing like the WFS of the past. My son discovered so many new interests and the boarding only environment fosters a deep brotherhood. It’s not for everyone though. Your child will have to work hard to be at the top of the class. That said there’s one of everyone there. Ridiculously wealthy kids, church mouse poor kids, future frat boys and excellent athletes. But when they all step onto that campus (all-boarding) you must differentiate yourself by your character and intellect. It is a gift we gave our child. The teachers are exceptional. If WFS had a motto it would be come as your are. We are so lucky we came that way.

How tough is it to be a top 5% student at Woodberry? My kid is 3 years ahead in math and has already completed advanced writing programs and can already produce essays at a Jr-Sr. high schooler level in the 8th grade. I'm not trying to brag, just trying to give insight to where my kid is academically. My assessment of WFS is that it's not a super academically-intense school, and that makes it easier to stand out on top.

They seem to have a strong science department. I’m not sure about other stuff.

Depends how hard your child wants to work. You have to remember that quite a few of these families that end up at Woodberry are old south and they own businesses throughout the south. College admissions may look just ok to some people, but many of these families only want to go back to their state school. There is a new impressive looking college counselor starting in the summer. I’d definitely recommend the overnight if your child gets in.
