I learned how to this when I brought my dog home. You have to approach your dog from behind. My dog is a toy breed. I can do this with one hand. I pry open his mouth with one hand, thumb on one side of his mouth and finger on the other side. Then I use my other hand to reach in his mouth and dislodge the food.
You don't want to reach in to your dog's mouth from in front and get in a tug of war. |
| I would reach into both my Alaskan malamutes’ mouths with my hand to extract undesirable things they had picked up in their mouths but they were gentle souls. I don’t universally recommend this . |
I do the same with my Goldens. They're pretty accommodating about letting me squeeze the sides of their mouths and shove my hand down their throats. |
| I can do this with my dog unless it's something super high value. This has happened more than once; on a walk and he finds a chicken bone on the ground. He gets so hyper and he chews so fast, I know I'd be bitten if I tried to take it from him (not on purpose but because he's hyper and fast chewing). I try the drop it command, and he will not. But around the house, if he has a sock or a shoe or a bra (he knows he shouldn't have these things he does it for attention). He'll make me chase him a bit but once i get him I have no problem taking it from his mouth. I can also tell him drop it and he will obey. |
