Cheap Train from New Haven to NYC

Anonymous
My son and I are visiting Yale this coming weekend and we are looking at taking the train from New Haven to New York City on Sunday 2/18

I initially considered Amtrak from either State Street station or New Haven Union station to NYC Penn. the tickets are currently $100 each for the early-afternoon time we need to travel to get back to NY in time. (I am a little annoyed with myself because when I first considered this trip the tickets were 1/3 this price and I procrastinated)

Looking online i see the CT Rail / Shoreline East commuter train from STS in New Haven to Grand Central. The fare is $25. Am I missing something? If I purchase 2 tickets with the MTA app today would this work for next Sunday? Right now price is my number one consideration because the hotel room increased by $100 as well. This was supposed to be a simple cheap long weekend/college visit trip. Add every minute I wait is blowing my budget out of the water.

Yes, Metro North tickets will be fine for next week. The line is open seating. You can even buy tickets on board (but for more money).

Metro North is 24.50 peak ad 18 off peak from NH to GCS. Add $6 if you buy on the train. It is almost 2hours each way.
