Original Art

Where have you found your original art for your home (if you have some)? And what are approximate costs (size, medium, price, etc)?

I don't want prints or copies, I want some unique pieces.

Start with local galleries and art festivals. I've bought some nice oil and watercolor paintings from the Torpedo Factory. Alexandria also has an annual outdoor art fest in August.

My favorite is a print screen that I got at a yard sale for $15. It’s probably 2’x3’. Love absolutely everything about it.

Next is two oil paintings I got from a local
Artist. They are 18x18 and are cherry blossoms. I probably paid ~$750 each. Saw her work locally and started stalking her instagram.

Currently stalking a couple of artists on instagram that I found by following some regional artist pages in facebook. I’m looking for something very specific and am willing to pay a couple of thousand for the perfect piece.

I tend to buy things on vacation if I have a few hours for strolling around somewhere. Asheville NC was great for this, and so was Positano in Italy. I also found some great vintage things in Frederick MD. And I bought a painting on EBTH I have no regrets about.

I don’t view art as any kind of investment, and I rarely spend more than $5k. That removes a lot of stress because I’m not worried about knowing a lot about what I’m buying, or getting a good “value.” I just buy what I like and enjoy it on my own terms.

Art by local artists is usually a waste of money unless you really love it. It’s better to save towards the purchase of something more important that will be a good investment piece.

Buy what you love (like what the other poster stated). My husband and I are from Louisiana and found some mardi gras pieces at a thrift store. Well, turns out they were orginals from a well known artist. I didn't even know their real worth, but just fell in love with them.

Most ppl aren't buying art for investment; they buy for their own enjoyment.

OP did not indicate that they're looking for investment pieces.

Almost no art is a good investment. The secondary market for art is very limited. It would be a big mistake for the vast majority of us to expect any sort of return on art purchases.

OP here. Not looking for investment. I agree with you that art is not the wisest of choices for that. I am looking for places to go and to get price point ideas. My friend just bought an acrylic piece that is pretty large (40 by 20) and it is gorgeous and honestly I would like to do the same. She was down in SC and it was at a small gallery and was 3K. I am not sure what rates are for anything, but I think I want to start looking for my own home.

I think that’s a good benchmark. At that level we’re all basically just paying the artist and the gallery for their time. I think the $1-5k range for small/medium paintings is about right depending on the artist’s style and how long it takes them.

In addition to our Wolf Kahn, we've enjoyed purchases of local artists' pieces at the Torpedo Factory https://torpedofactory.org/ and the Yellow Barn at Glen Echo. https://walterbartman.com/yellow-barn-gallery/

Good luck!

Factor in medium used, size of canvas, and if framed.

Galleries suck money from Artists.
