Neighbor feeding squirrels

Anonymous
I’m at a loss. There is an elderly lady on our street who is feeding squirrels so much that we now have a squirrel infestation on our street. They have chewed our deck, built nests in our neighbor’s eaves, and poop all over the driveways and outdoor tables.

I like this old lady and am at a loss on how to approach her to ask her to stop. It is one of the highlights of her day I imagine.

Can anyone think of a good way to approach this situation?

Odds are that you are being dramatic and nowhere near as big of a problem as you make it out to be.

I would imagine she’s feeding the squirrels that were already there, and it’s doubtful the squirrels have recruited dining companions.

We have TONS of squirrels in our yard and I don’t even know what squirrel poop looks like. Also, why are they all over your yard? Get a pest deterrent system.

OP again. It’s been the topic of discussion of about 8 other neighbors on the street. They’re clearly breeding.

I was wondering what these black pellets carpeting our deck and driveway were. So I googled it. Squirrel poop.

We’ve lived here for 7 years and never noticed anything. Last spring, neighbor started feeding large quantities of shelled peanuts and bird seed to squirrels in her yard.

We’ve all noticed this issue. So have 2 small hawks who now are often perched on her fence waiting for dinner I guess.

Back to original question. Any tips?

No one will give you tips because you sound psycho. You have 8 imaginary neighbors backing you up but not one person can come up with a solution to your squirrel invasion? Haha

Maybe she identifies as a squirrel and they’re concerned about the neighborhood human invasion.

No. It’s squirrels. Get an ultrasonic pest deterrent. Our neighbor has one and never has so much as a bird in her yard.

Yes. Draw straws on which one of the nine of you will grow balls and talk to your neighbor about it.

OP - I can sympathize. We have someone on our street feeding peanuts to squirrels. I have had squirrels removed from my attic, my screened in deck and the engine of my car. I HATE them. I find the peanut shells in my yard and it drives me nuts - even more because I have a peanut allergy. I wish I had an answer.

Ugh, OP! That sucks. People go on these Snow White fantasy trips and it’s not good for the animals or anyone else. I feel the same way about people who feed feral cats, too.

You’re probably screwed. You could try to stop her but she’ll probably just keep doing it in secret, or try to. No one is going to put her in jail so the chances you actually stop her are slim.

I would try any kind of squirrel repellent on your property but you might just have to wait for her to die. That’s what solved our feral cat problem. Nothing short of that would have stopped her.

Squirrel populations have boom and bust years related to oak tree masting. It isn't your neighbor, it's the oak trees in your area.

OP’s deck: 10/10, would poop here again.

This year was a mast year for oak trees OP. There are now too many squirrels and too many healthy deer will be having too many fawns this spring / summer as well.

Some of the migrating hawks will take out the squirrels this spring.
