Book club for middle schoolers

Anonymous
My 6th grader hates English class because the teacher only pays attention to the trouble makers. She's smart (was in ELC in 4/5). As everyone knows here, middle school English is completely dumbed down in mcps. We have given up. Has anyone found an online book club/writing enrichment that they could recommend?

Does her middle school have a “book wars” team? Ours does and both my kids did it and loved it!

They do but it unfortunately conflicts with another activity she does

What's stopping your daughter from reading and writing at home? Are you a fluent English reader and writer?

Can you ask the book wars teacher if she could read the books separately and then come to an occasional meeting? My kids school does those meetings at lunch, not after school. Maybe she could read and contribute questions separately but then participate in the competition??

What does a kid not in BWars do if they have read all the books on BWars list?

Enjoy reading? Talk to friends about the books?

Out School has several book clubs. Supposed Mary Hanna’s is popular.

Check the MoCo library. Often they have book clubs.

Agree with others about Book Wars usually being during lunch. Have kid talk to media center specialist about options.

Agree with the Book Wars suggestion. My kid loves the club.

OP are there other kids in the same position in your school? Could they start a book club together?

This is OP. I actually love our school. My kids have had a great time and learned a lot.

But not in English. English is terrible.

Are there any good book clubs you'd recommend since BWars is not available to us?

Yes we read a lot at school. I let them choose and they choose easy reads.

Not OP but I’m looking for something similar for my bored middle schooler, potentially as a summer activity. Op or anyone, any recommendations?
