Setting up parent teacher conference in high school

Anonymous
Can we set up a parent teacher conference if a student has A or A- in a class? In elementary school we had them, and we would hear from our kids teachers even if they doing well, not I haven't gotten a single email from my dd teacher. Is there a point of setting up a conference to see what's going on is it a waste of time?

What do you want to talk about?

Speaking candidly as a former HS teacher (now a parent of ES students), I would view a conference for an "A" student as a complete waste of my time unless there was an actual need to discuss a specific purpose.

Your daughter is one of 25ish in an elementary school classroom and one of 150ish at the high school level. You are not going to hear from the teachers unless there is an issue.

Sounds like a call I had with a parent who was upset their child's "grade dropped" (98 to 97) and wanted to know what they could do to improve. Give me a break

Did you have parent teacher conferences in middle school? So far, my DS is an 8th grader and we have not had any conferences.

My response would be to “do better on the next test“

This. OP what is your concern? Does the concern relate to one class only?

I tell parents and kids that I expect some points will missed on each test and quiz even for the best students since mistakes can happen on timed assessments.

It is easier for me to deal with kids and parents who want to do better. The students are parents who do not show up are harder to work with.

Yes. If you have something to ask. A teacher will not set one up for kids who have an A or A-

OP if you have a concern, please reach out. I have had conferences (phone calls) for students who had A's but parents wanted to tell me that there were out of class issues (bullying, intense extra curricular season, divorce at home). It is helpful for me to know these things so I can look out for red flags sooner.

If you just want me to spend 20 minutes telling you that your kid is doing everything they need to be doing because you want to hear about their day, then no--you won't get that and asking for it will frustrate teachers.

This can not be a serious question. I would love it if you set up a parent teacher conference with me for an A- minus child. I would need a good laugh in this career.

Right. What is there to meet about?

"Parents are checked out." "Parents are not involved."

Also "I would laugh if parents called me about their good student."

just send the teacher a $25 starbucks gift card with a big thank you and have a great summer message instead.
