| I don't do returns much but I bought something from amazon that doesn't work but I already threw out the product packaging can I still return it. Just to be clear, I'm not asking about the mailer or box it was mailed in but the actual product packaging. Anyone know? Thanks. |
| What was it and what kind of packaging? Like there's a difference between a sweater that came in plastic packaging, versus a toy with multiple parts that came in a specialized packaging that keeps all those parts separate and clearly labeled. Or unassembled furniture that might be awkward to routine without the boxes it came in and the bag for hardware. |
| I doubt they will want the physical return if it’s broken. Start a chat and explain that it’s broken and you want a replacement or refund. I bet they’ll quickly do either, and tell you to keep or throw away the defective item. |
Amazon has gotten worse about returns. I had a delivery of dish soap that arrived crushed and leaked all over the package. I contacted them about a refund and they told me I need to mail back the damaged product. It was a mess. I just sucked it up and took the loss rather than package up some busted Dawn dish soap bottles. More than once, I’ve had a two-pack or set of items arrive with parts missing. Amazon used to say “just keep it and we’ll send you the right item.” Now they want the product with missing parts back. It’s fine, I’ll send it back, but I worry often that I won’t get a refund because they’ll assume I’m lying about the missing item. Point it, Amazon is not longer easy and chill about returns, probably due to abuse by “influencers” and other people who took advantage. I try to buy as little there as possible these days.

Good post. |
This is true, but I’ve found that if I don’t back down in the chat, they do surrender first. Just don’t give up. Ask to speak to a supervisor. Tell them you aren’t ending the chat until the issue is resolved to your liking. Ask for an Amazon credit instead (they are very responsive to this.) |
I ordered powdered Baby Oxyclean detergent from Amazon and they sent the container (with flexible plastic lid) in a floppy white plastic sack instead of a box. The lid does not have a pull seal or an internal film across the package. So the lid came off and it all spilled into the bag. The refund policy was same for damaged items...ship it back. Yeah, right! Since I can't find this product locally, I salvaged what I could from the plastic sack by pouring it back into the original container. I only lost about 10%. This, and another experience involving a cracked cap on a 1 gallon (industrial-size) bottle of hand soap, has made me much more cautious about ordering chemical products from Amazon. |
| I thought you could take it to Whole Foods and they will repackage |
I guess you didn't read the post. |
| Whenever I get a damaged item, I just chat them. They usually just refund me and tell me to keep the item. I just did this the other day with Clorox wipes that were leaking all over in the plastic bag. |
| Op, I would start the return process and see if they offer to refund the money without having to return it. If they say you need to return it, I would go ahead and return it. What do you have to lose? |
