What are these divided plates for?

Anonymous
We are cleaning out a relative's house and she has about twenty crystal plates that look almost exactly like the link below, with a large plate area and two small side compartments. They are heavy crystal.

What is the purpose of these? Why/ when are they supposed to be used?

It’s for serving nibbles for cocktail hour: cheese, crackers, nuts, meats, veg etc. Maybe you can send a few to the poster on the family relationships forum.

LOL!

I have a friend who loves to entertain. Could I gift these to her? or are they way out of style?

TY for the info, DCUM! I found crystal teacups that seem to fit perfectly in one of the compartments. I knew to match them up with the plates thanks to DCUM!

Thank you, I do too! I will wait to see if DCUMers tell me they're too small, too much like their MIL's, whatever, LOL!

That is not for nibbles, that’s for lady’s lunches, back when women would have ladylike meals for all the ladies in their church or quilting or whatever circle in their homes at lunch. There wouldn’t necessarily be enough table space, so you’d balance your little plate/tray on your knees. By custom it was a lighter meal so they’re not huge. Some of them even have a little round space where you’d put your cup.

If they're crystal, don't use them every day, they have lead.

Not all crystal has lead in it but what OP has is more likely to be cut glass—we have a lot of it from my late MIL and the family always refers to it as crystal.

My mother used for teas and baby showers.
You could walk, talk or sit, all while sipping punch and eating your finger foods.
Then refill on something new from the table.
