Dropping from honors math to on-level between semester 1 & 2

Anonymous
MY DC is struggling in an honors level HS math class. Is it possible to switch into the on-level math course in semester 2? Has anyone's kid done this and how did it go? Anything we should consider if the change is possible?

Ask a school counselor, at your particular school, if it's allowed or it's not. Better start there.

Yes it’s possible. A level change in math at the semester is very common (also after 1st quarter.)

Our High Schooler did, but honestly didn’t help much. He still struggled and didn’t have the honors bump to help his GPA.

I suggest tutoring.

My son went from honors geometry to on-level 2nd semester. It helped his confidence immensely. He was barely passing honors even with tutoring so we had no choice. But if he’d had a B in honors (possibly even a C), I would have encouraged him to stay because there was a world of difference in content.

How did that play out?

Same grade in the honors and non-honors class?

Honors class gave a courtesy C while non-honors gave a regular C?

If this is honors geometry in MS, likely he won’t be able to because there is no on-level offered to my knowledge in MS. If it is in HS then this can be done.
