Is Napoleon ok to see with your 14yo?

Anonymous
I’m trying to figure out if Napoleon is appropriate for a 14yo and in particular how graphic the sex scenes are. I’m uncomfortable watching something with her if there are people on screen pumping away or someone’s getting it front behind. (Yes, I’m a prude!)

Has anyone seen it who can weigh in?

Sex scenes are weird. I thought about taking my teens but didn’t want to see a 3 hour movie that has really bad reviews with strange sex scenes.

We went with our 2 teenagers, 19 & 14. The sex scenes were uncomfortable and unnecessary. They're relatively short if that helps. It's not a great movie by any standard. I didn't love Oppenheimer, but at least it was compelling. Napoleon was boring and laugh-out-loud stupid at times (there's a hilariously awful line about destiny & pork chops.)

Hmmm. Ok, we’ll skip it. Weird sex scenes and long boring movie does not sound compelling! That’s too bad. You’d think Napoleon would make a subject for a great movie.

PP, my kid really loved Oppenheimer, which I haven’t seen yet.

Thanks for the responses!

We saw it last night and it was awful. Skip it and you won’t have to worry about the sex scenes. In one Napoleon is taking Josephine from behind and the look on her face is one of “I feel like the audience, I wish I wasn’t here.”

Watch the Napoleon movie with Isabela Rosselini instead, came about about 15-20 years ago, it was great. I watched it on Amazon Prime.

The best description of the sex scenes came from a British critic who called them “Canine”. I just laughed out loud because it’s so true.

I would be more concerned about the historical accuracy. The French hate it.

Idk why most directors put too many unnecessary sex scenes in movies. Movie industry is obsessed with sex.

I'm French. I'm going to pass. It's very, very disconcerting to hear Napoleon talk in English!
I love Oppenheimer, but did not bring my 13 year old to watch the entirely gratuitous sex scenes of that movie.
I think if you love well-managed scenes of war, you might like the new Napoleon movie, but really, that's it. It's all that Ridley Scott does well here, apparently.

I mean from what I understand it’s terrible cinema

I just saw it with my 11 year old and his friend who both love history. They liked it. I thought it was boring and way too long, although there were some interesting battle scenes.

The sex scenes are uncomfortable but very quick and not super graphic.

Show her Napoleon Dynamite instead.

The sexual proclivities of Napoleon and Josephine Bonaparte are the stuff of legend.

I think a history of Napoleon that doesn’t recount one of his greatest driving obsessions would be a failure.

Maybe prudes just need to lighten up and accept that human primates generally like to have sex when a pleasant opportunity arises so of course their art is going to reflect that innate drive.

And violence. I truly wish the film industry would have less violence. I don't think it helps our society to have so much constant violence being portrayed on film (and in video games).

BTW OP, forgive me if you know this already, but I find that this type of info is always available on Common Sense Media. They review all new movies, and rate them for age-appropriateness. That web site is very helpful, in my experience.
