Anesthesia for FET

Anonymous
My Dr gave me the option for anesthesia during our upcoming fet. I have a hard time with anything inserted and the transvaginal ultrasounds still take work and hurt.

We tried out my threshold for a speculum today but she explained it would need to be in for 5 min on a good day. And that we could do Valium but at that point anesthesia might be best.

She feels like if we run into placement issues or my cervix is acting funny that it will prolong the pain for me. Under anesthesia she will be able to place it and we won't have the time restraint of getting me over the hump and the embryo being out too long.

I'm trying to find data to support anesthesia for FET and the outcomes. Anyone go under and have success?

Seriously? I’ve had so many FETs and they have never taken five min. Usually like one minute max. I was with SG though and they did a practice run so maybe that’s why it went so fast.

We are at a big hospital fertility center. I feel confident in them but now figuring out paying for it oop and seeing success rates.

Would it help if you insert the speculum yourself? I would think they could offer whatever light anesthesia they use for egg retrievals.

The insertion went okay I mean she got it in. And I love our Dr. It's not a skill or comfort thing with me. Physically any insertion is very painful. One she opened it and held it I was clenched and shaking. I was able to calm myself but I'm worried I'll be so clenched it will hinder placement or if the day of something is off and they need to do more manipulation or placement issues I won't be able to handle it

I used anesthesia for an FET and I’m glad I did.

Do the twilight anesthesia. There’s no reason to suffer like this. The process is bad enough.

+1 to this.
Prior to going through pregnancy and childbirth, I had a very sensitive cervix and had issues with my first 2 IUIs…and the HSG was an absolute nightmare for me, so much so that the RE who performed it had to dilate my cervix a bit to get the catheter in. Thankfully, I never had any issues with my FETs, but I see no reason why you should have to suffer if the RE is offering you the option of twilight anesthesia.

Thanks all. It's an oops cost but I do think it will be worth it. Hopefully this sticks

How do you have sex? Not being snarky, genuinely curious.

Sex shouldn’t involve your cervix.

Omg no. You sound unstable. I had no pain relief for the retrieval and certainly nothing for the transfer. If you can’t handle tgat, how do you plan to have a kid?

I absolutely hate pap smears and clench up in pain but I didn't feel the FETs at all.

You’re cruel. We all handle life as it comes. I feared speculums and handled pregnancy one day at a time. I’ve handled motherhood one day at a time. For all of us, this is our first time doing life. We don’t have all the answers before having life experience.

It's super painful all the time. Usually in the beginning. And if I can relax enough and use external stimulation it helps. But I've never been able to use internal sex toys or even tampons. Insertion is hard.
