According to this article, it sounds like our taxes are going up.
https://wtop.com/maryland/2023/11/upping-revenue-likely-the-least-disruptive-way-to-address-future-deficits-state-budget-expert-says/ I wish they could review all the books and figure out what is really needed. MoCo taxes already went up to support schools and now our state taxes are going up to do the same. I strongly support our schools but wonder if they really reviewed the budge in enough detail to ensure this is really the “least disruptive” option. |

Surprised Wes Moore doesn’t want to be President. Because he is not governing like it.
First budget spends rainy day fund. Second budget raises taxes as “less disruptive” than budget cuts? This is a liberal caricature. Notably, not even California is run like this at the state level. Disappointed that I was fooled into voting for this clown as the “moderate” choice. |
| I mean, it’s Maryland. Why are we surprised? Land of overspending, overtaxation, stagnant population growth, and weakening economic clout. |
|
If there is any consolation for MD, DC is proposing to increase their taxes, particularly on higher income households, and is well advanced in developing various proposals to do so.
So if MD is going down, DC will get there first. https://www.dctaxrevisioncommission.org/proposals |
| Soon md will be like IL. Good luck to you all. |
We’re not going to become IL because we’re not dumb enough to propose laws that would drive Legg Mason and other major employers away. In fact, it’s the opposite. They will bend over backwards to provide continuous major subsidies to existing employers. The problem is that we have nothing to offer that would encourage a business to start or move here. |
The main reason IL is in its current predicament is because of its massive unfunded pension liabilities. Maryland is doing comparatively well in that regard, so you'll have to root a little harder for Maryland to fail. |
|
Why is anyone surprised?
All Democrats do is tax and spend. Their solution to everything is more taxes, because don’t you know? It’s never a spending problem. They need to enact stronger austerity. Cut 50% of state worker jobs to shed all of the insane pension liabilities. Stop making MD such a hellhole to do business in. Get more competitive with NoVa and steal companies by making it more attractive to do business in the state. MD is one of the worst states in the entire country to start businesses. |

Ignoring the partisan back and forth generalities here...
This was obvious the second Kirwin commission was approved. There was just no way to pay for such a massive educational spending package without a significant tax increase. And now the bill is coming due. Did I particularly agree with all of Kirwin? No not really. But this is where we are, and no one should be surprised. |
DC has to raise upper bracket income taxes and higher value residential assessments a lot to offset the fall-off in the commercial real estate tax base. And Bowser will spin it as “equity.” |
| College tuition is extremely expensive. And if we are going to continue to offer in-state tuition discounts to illegal immigrants and their children, the rest of us are going to just have to dig deeper. |
