Gift ideas for 9-10 year old girls?

Anonymous
We are sponsoring a family with 9 and 10 year old girls but my kids are in K so I have no idea what kids that age are even into! And don’t know these specific kids interests.

Also open to book recommendations?

This is a good list. For water bottles, I'll add that the Nike bottles seem to be popular with that age group. Squishmallows are VERY popular.

The Babysitters Club books are being turned into graphic novels. I think they're up to #14. Anything by Katherine Applegate or Kate DiCamillo is good. The James Ponti series Framed or City Spies are both great choices.

This is a great list as the mom of a 9 year old who has been attending a lot of bday parties lately! I would also add that anything Taylor Swift related is hugely popular - friendship bracelets, shirts, bags etc. have been the biggest hit at recent parties

Definitely not Barbies for this age!

To elaborate on jewelry ...anything with their name or initials is hugely popular. Kendra Scott is a favorite, but there are plenty of cute, much more budget-friendly options.

Do 9 year olds not play with Barbie?

Slime for sure
Keeper of the Lost Cities books, or graphic novels (Babysitters Club, Kayla Miller books, Terri Libenson)
Experiences at arcades, virtual reality, puzzle rooms
Hoodies
Karaoke microphone
Water bottle stickers
Room decor, like a cool LED sign

My 9 year old is really into making bracelets for her friends. 9 year old niece loves making balloon animals. Kits for both sold on Amazon.

Lego Friends sets

Not Barbie. And probably not Lego Friends. My six year old would love these, but my 10 year old would view as baby-ish

My 10 year old is asking for these types of things for Christmas:
Slime and putty
Cool water bottles
Lotions and makeup items
Squishmallows
Converse shoes
Art supplies (sharpies, glitter glue, duct tape)
Drawing pads and journals

Stickers and fidgets are also popular.

My 9.5 yo does not play with Barbie’s.. but then she never has. I don’t think her friends are into them either. Stuffed animals on the other hand… especially Squishmallows are coveted.

My just turned 10yo isn’t into Barbies anymore. This is probably kid dependent but I don’t think it’s safe to assume that a Barbie is a good choice because at this age a lot of the girls are more tween-ish and are outgrowing toys like that.

I suggest:

-Squishmallows
-Journals and pens (like the ones at Barnes and Noble- nicer notebooks)
-Stickers
-Oversized hoodies (2 sizes bigger than they would typically wear)
-Y2K style jewelry
-Water bottle (Owala, 20 Oz Stanley)
-Bubbles skincare. This is very popular with this age set right now
-Graphic novels - Babysitters Club, anything Reina Telegemeier
-A desktop light up vanity mirror from Amazon
-Hello Kitty themed lip balm from Ulta - I think they’re shaped like macarons with different flavors for each character
-Room decor from 5 Below - there’s cute posters, little gauze canopies for above their bed
-Art supplies if they’re into that - air dry clay is very popular with my kid

Mine never did Barbies or got into makeup or skin care stuff

Agree with

Squishmallows

Art supplies, especially good quality paper and colored pencils like primsacolor

Graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier
Books by Kate DiCamillo

Also suggest

Big beautiful reference/ knowledge book to go through and get inspired like The Encyclopedia of Nature or Encyclopedia of Everything (eyewitness books, Smithsonian, and dk Publishing are generally pretty good sources)

And some nice quality illustrated classic books like Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Anne of Green Gables, A Secret Garden, A Little Princess

Games like Uno, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

STEM kits by National Geographic

All this. We must have the same kid.

If they like to read then they might like Shannon Hale’s Real Friends book. My daughter read it in fourth grade but it does have some mature themes (bullying, exclusion, OCD, abusive sibling with anger issues, there is a scene where a 7yo boy kisses a 7yo girl without permission). The Babysitters Club is a good series. The first five graphic novels are illustrated by Raina Telgemeier and the books written by Raina are longer with better illustrations. My daughters also liked Amelia’s Journals, American Girl books, the Cupcake Diary books (it’s a series like the BSC and it has over 25 books) and the Mother Daughter Book Club books at that age.

Other gift options: New shoes, Squishmellows, water bottles, art supplies (my daughters loved getting new markers/highlighters and journals from 5 Below), stickers, bracelets, nice coloring books, things for dance/sports.
