I’m an HBCU alum and loved my college experience, however DS is primarily interested in PWI colleges due to his major.
What PWI colleges have you/your child enjoyed attending? Did you have any issues finding a friend group and social activities? Any PWI colleges you did not have a good experience at as an URM? |

| My kid is at brown. Has found a community but says that black population seems smaller than she expected based in stats she saw on paper when she applied. |
| One of my closest friend's son (they are Black) is currently at GMU, which is technically a PWI--though very diverse and on the list of Minority Serving Institutions. They have been very pleased with the community, support, expectations. He's in a Black STEM organization that has been particularly helpful with navigating some major-specific challenges. |
| Kid is very happy at Temple. Highly diverse. |
Temple's neighborhood is ROUGH |
Is your kid ados? That’s probably why the community feels smaller than what’s advertised on paper |
Their immediate campus is gorgeous, and they have safety units traveling the campus on bikes 24/7. |
Well aware. He was intentional in his choice of college. |
I am an African-American who went to an HBCU and then GWU for law school. I was amazed at how many black people were at the law school. I loved my time there. The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) was super strong. I am not surprised undergrad is the same way. |

Temple, VCU, GMU, Towson, UMBC are good options

| I’m hearing to avoid Boston College. But I know a group of POC graduates who remained friends and seem to have enjoyed college there 20 years ago. |
| UMiami |
My kid is at a PWI and I am a graduate of 2 PWIs. What is your DS's intended major? |
| My African American DD is a junior at Columbia and loves it. I’m actually surprised every time I visit at the amount of POC walking around campus. She loves being in the city. |
