Day trip from Rome to Naples (Amalfi/Positano/Pompeii)

Anonymous
Has anyone done a day trip to the Naples area (Sorrento/Amalfi/Positano/Pompeii) while staying in Rome? We are planning a trip to Italy and would like to see the Amalfi Coast and do a relatively quick (2-hour?) tour of Pompeii, but we don't necessarily want to stay in that area overnight and take away from Rome, Venice, etc. I'm seeing on Tripadvisor that there are day tours you can book from Rome, bt that seems like a long drive there and back in a bus. Some others recommend just taking the train to Naples, which supposedly takes about 70 minutes and is reasonably priced, and then hiring a guide to drive us where we want to go. Has anyone done either of these options?

Take the train and go to Pompeii. Unless you’re going in the middle of winter, Amalfi is just a crowded tourist trap, and you don’t want to do that bus trip and also go to and from Rome in a day. The other option is to take a boat to Capri and go up the top to Anacapri.

We took the train from Naples to rome and it was easy and comfortable, but I would just skip it. It doesn’t sound like a fun day to me at all. It’s too far.

We loved the Amalfi coast, how long is your trip total? I think it’s worth a few days

There were a number of detailed threads about this in the last few months. Tons of discussion about specifics, trains to take, etc. Search and you will find them.

We took the train from Rome to Pompeii in the morning, but visiting the ruins took significantly longer than 2 hrs. The best parts are at the back of the area so there is a lot of walking. We stayed overnight in Pompeii, which was very relaxing after the hectic pace we kept in Rome and Venice.

If you have just one day I’d just visit Pompeii. Trying to visit the ruins plus Naples and Amalfi in one day would be a back breaker.

Amalfi isn't a day trip. You would want to spend at least a couple days there to explore the different towns. Whereas Naples you could do it in a day if you wanted.

I found Venice to be boring. Its beautiful but its tiny and there isn't that much to do. And everything shuts down at 8-9pm. I would spend more time in Rome/Naples/Amalfi.

Imo, you pass through Naples, it's a transportation hub to Pompeii or Amalfi.

We did a day trip from Rome to Pompeii with a private tour. It was a long day but good. My kids were 7, 5, and 2 at the time. I had wanted to add in Positano but ultimately that was too much for us at that time.
