Not too sweet dessert ideas

Anonymous
My husband has a sweet tooth, but needs to cut back on sugar consumption (he's in good shape but his lab work showed that he has pre diabetes). Any ideas for low sugar (and I'm new to this so maybe also need to be low carb?) desserts or treats would be greatly appreciated.

Freezing chopped up bananas, then putting them in the blender and adding a touch of whipped cream if u like - tastes like ice cream! You can sprinkle a few dark chocolate chips on top too.

^although I know bananas are high in sugar…

Strawberries Romanoff. Fresh strawberries with a lightly sweetened whip cream or sour cream based sauce.

A small piece of really good chocolate.

Basically you can cut sugar by having a small portion of something that, if larger, has a lot of sugar. Or you can have a larger portion of something that doesn’t have much sugar, like fruit.

Yes since it is carbs overall not just sweet...look for keto friendly items. Unfortunately many are very processed. I think reducing the desserts in size or frequency is the way to go.

There are some amazing ricotta based desserts that my friend makes but I don't know which recipes.

He'll probably find that by cutting sugar, he'll start to prefer items made less sweet.

Fwiw for people I know who temporarily had prediabetes, it is just as or more important to get consistent sleep and manage stress. And regular exercise.

Often has a lot of sugar already present in the fruit, and now it's concentrated. Fresh fruit is much, much better than dried, if you are looking at keeping sugar content down.

When you compare the nutrients in dried vs fresh mangoes, you can clearly see that dried mangoes have a lot more sugar. The 100-gram samples had 66.3 grams of sugar compared to the 13.7 grams found in 100 grams of fresh mango.

Dried fruit can boost your fiber and nutrient intake and supply your body with large amounts of antioxidants. But it’s also a high carb food, containing sugar and many calories and can cause problems if you eat too much.

I'm on keto and have been amazed at the desserts I can have; non-sugar sweeteners have come a long way. Just look up keto dessert recipes.

And fwiw, it's expensive, but I ordered a birthday cake from Something Keto in NOVA and it was the best cake I've ever had; not the best keto cake -- the best cake period.

Ok with artificial sweeteners? Look up protein pudding recipes. Some use greek yogurt as the base. Some use sugar free jello pudding. I prefer the pudding ones. Here’s a favorite: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPR7cC6jX/

If you do this do you not need to add liquid in the blender?

Small portions of really good chocolate or ice cream. Or excellent fruit. Quality over quantity.
